When Is Mother’s Day 2015? Last-Minute Gift Guide & Top UK Things To Do

Everything you need to know about Mothering Sunday, including our awesome gift guide and top events listings

Though it was only created a few decades ago Mother's Day is now a firm fixture in the celebration calendar - and it's the one day of the year where you can focus on what your mum wants to do, rather than surreptitiously trying to make her take you out for lunch.

And as we're probably all guilty of failing to give Mum the attention she deserves, it's time to make ammends for all the laundry she's done for you, all those school packed lunches, and all hours spent listening to you complain about your job/flatmtes/boyfriend/hair.

When is Mother's Day 2015?

This year Mother's Day falls on Sunday 15 March.

It originated in the United States, where it's usually celebrated on a different day in May (so when it pops up again online, remember we've already had ours!).

Why we celebrate Mothering Sunday

Contrary to popular belief Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday are NOT the same thing.

Mothering Sunday was an old Christian tradition here in the UK dating back to the 16th Century, when people traditionally returned to their ‘mother church’ on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Now we merge the date so Mother's Day always falls on Mothering Sunday - which is why the date changes every year.

Modern Mother's Day

The tradition died out over the years until 1908 when an American lady named Anna Jarvis started a campaign for an official day to recognize the wonderfulness of mothers.

Anna was inspired after the death of her own mother, social activist Ann, and fought to create a national holiday.

She was successful and 1914 saw the first official Mother’s Day in the US.

Ironically, by the early 1920s Anna had become completely disenchanted with how commercialised the holiday had become.

She was even arrested for disturbing the peace while protesting the day she had helped to create.
