Woman training for half marathon didn’t know she was pregnant, has miracle baby five weeks early

Trish Staine’s husband had a vasectomy, she didn’t put weight any on and still had periods

A woman from the US has defied the odds by giving birth while training for a half marathon – and after her husband had a vasectomy.

Trish Staine from Minnesota just thought she was experiencing severe back pain after running nine miles, but it turns out she was in fact 35 weeks pregnant and ready for labour.

The 33-year-old mother from Duluth had gone for her typical training run on Sunday morning when she began to suffer stiffness in her lower back.

Assuming the pain would subside, Patricia – or Trish as she is known to friends – had a lie down, ran a bath and took painkillers.

When the pain got considerably worse – ‘I felt like I was dying’, she told the Associated Press – her husband called an ambulance.

It was at the hospital where staff told Trish they had detected a foetal heartbeat and she was rushed into labour, giving birth to a healthy 6-pound baby girl just minutes after being admitted.

The baby, who the couple have named Mira – short for Miracle – took them by surprise as husband John had previously had a vasectomy.

“Whose baby is that? It’s not possible,” he told doctors when he entered the hospital, reported the Duluth News Tribune.

Not only that, but Trish had continued having periods and she hadn’t put on any weight – she told reporters she had ‘no idea’ she was pregnant.

“She didn’t gain any weight,” John told AP. “Her face was even thinner.”

Baby Mira joins a growing family – the couple already have two biological children aged 7 and 11, three children from John’s previous marriage and foster children.

John was so shocked by the birth he got the doctor at the hospital to pinch him to prove it was real.

“It was like a dream,” John told reporters. “I wanted to make sure it was real.”

And will Trish continue to run the half marathon on 22 June as planned?

“We paid for it,” John Staine said. “They’ve already cashed the cheque.”
