Are you pregnant with a girl or boy? Old wives tales that predict your baby's sex

Kim Kardashian discovered her baby's sex this weekend but long before ultrasounds, old wives' tales have given us plenty of clues to look out for when it comes to guessing boy or girl

Pregnant Kim Kardashian is expecting a baby girl - and we bet no one is surprised.

The revelation on her reality TV show 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' was met with delight, but if you'd been studying the signs, there were a few early clues that Kim was carrying a baby girl.

Carrying extra weight

Having a growing baby in your belly obviously means you'll be putting on weight during pregnancy, and many mums-to-be find that it's not just their baby bump that grows.

But where you put weight on can give you clues about whether you're expecting a baby girl or boy. If, like Kim, you put weight on your hips and bum, the old wives' tale suggests you're more likely to be expecting a girl. If the extra weight is all up front on your belly, it's a boy for you.

Baby girls steal your beauty

Kim has been looking pretty good during her pregnancy, but she's got a team of stylists behind her on high alert. According to the old wives tale, baby girls 'steal your beauty' so while women pregnant with boys will be glowing, with glossy hair and luminous skin, if you've got a girl in there you'll have to work harder to look good and may struggle with thin, dull hair and breakouts.

Breasts have 'blossomed'

Kim was always fairly well endowed, shall we say, but during her pregnancy no one can fail to notice how humungous her breasts have grown. Boy or girl, most women find their breasts grow during and after pregnancy as the body prepares to feed the new arrival. But if your breasts have really blossomed, rumour has it, it's a girl in there.

Another old wives' view is that if your left breast is larger than the right, you're expecting a girl. But that's something perhaps only Kim and Kanye will be able to tell...

Sweet cravings

Kim has been enjoying her pregnancy as a time to kick back and eat what she likes - though she's combined this with a strict exercise programme. To satisfy her sweet cravings, she's been hitting the fro-yo. Apparently she heads to her favourite frozen yogurt shop daily for a hit of the ice cream alternative. Sweet, sugary and fruity cravings are a sure sign of a baby girl.

Has your partner put on weight?

If Kanye's looking bigger than usual in the last few months of Kim's pregnancy, it could also be because they're expecting a baby girl. For some reason, dads-to-be are thought to gain weight along with their partners when the baby is a girl but not when a baby boy is expected. We've been studying the pictures  and to be honest, we're not sure. But he's certainly been wearing more slimming black of late...

In the family...

The Kardashians are a fairly female-heavy bunch when you look at the entire family. Of Kris Jenner's six children, only one is a boy. Kim's sister Kourtney, however, does have one of each.

There are some studies that suggest some families are more likely to have a string of one particular gender but ultimately the birth rate in the west is pretty steady at 49 per cent female, 51 per cent male.

Can you trust the old wives?

Those old wives aren't always right. Baby girls are thought to bring with them more morning sickness than boys, but Kim didn't experience any with her pregnancy, sailing through the first trimester with no nausea.

Other signs of a girl only Kim will know include the hair on your legs growing faster and urine being a dull yellow (with a boy it's brighter). The shape of the bump also holds clues. If it's round like a basket ball, there's a good chance there's a boy in there, but a more oval-shaped, watermelon-like bump and you're likely to be having a girl.
