The 'Feminist' Chanel Show At Paris Fashion Week Completely Missed The Point

Hmm, slightly undermining what the lovely Emma Watson has done for us recently.

Oh hi there Karl Lagerfeld, we love your tweed two-pieces and some of those boots are divine, but could you maybe lay off the misleading "feminist" slogans?

Cheers :0)

Thanks to fantastic, moving speeches by women such as Emma Watson - during the #HeForShe campaign - and Laura Bates - on behalf of her Everyday Sexism organisation - we've really seen perceptions of feminism take a turn for the better.

The general public are more frequently understanding the term to mean "equality between the sexes" both socially and politically.

We have learnt that feminism, in its purest form, is not about man-hating, or putting women first before all others, or bra burning or any of that nonsense.

Boys are great, we love boys - we just want to be socially and politically on their level.

Simples!

But it wouldn't be like fashuuun darling to miss out on a popular trend - so Karl Lagerfeld and his team hopped on the feminism bandwagon, and risked taking it a giant step backwards in the process.

At the Chanel runway show, models stormed the catwalk, not just to show off the latest designs, but also to create a protest scene, supposedly in the name of "feminism."

However, shouting over megaphones and massive placards proclaiming "LADIES FIRST", "History is HER STORY" and "Divorce Pour Tous" (divorce for all) conjure exactly the sort of negative, aggressive, female supremacist public image that feminism has had for the last few decades.

Not cool Mr Lagerfeld, not cool at all.

It isn't true to say that some people are allowed to be feminists and others aren't.

The whole point of everybody being equal is that it isn't an exclusive club.

Emma Watson, who up until recently had been known for her acting and her style more than anything else, has quickly become a brilliant figurehead for the feminist #HeForShe campaign.

So there's nothing to say that models like Kendall Jenner and designers like Lagerfeld cannot also become fabulous role models in the same arena.

But this just isn't the way to do it.

Let's hope not too many impressionable fashion folk take a lesson from the Chanel-Lagerfeld book.
