X Factor’s Mel B Had A Wardrobe Disaster At The MOBOs, Reveals Fashion Designer Julien Macdonald - EXCLUSIVE

The former Strictly contestant told us it wasn’t all plain sailing when it came to styling the X Factor judge in seven different dresses

It’s the first time she’s hosted the MOBOs since becoming a judge on UK version of The X Factor, so naturally all eyes were on her.

But Mel B’s wardrobe choices attracted more headlines than the awards themselves as she wore SEVEN different dresses in one night.

And now fashion designer Julien Macdonald – who dressed the former Spice Girl for the awards ceremony – has revealed it wasn’t all plain sailing when it came to styling her because she decided to change all her outfits at the last minute.

And bizarrely, it all started when the pair bumped into each other at a London gym.

“Me and Mel B go to Barry’s Bootcamp together and she said she’s been trying to get hold of me because she’s got the MOBOs coming up and she needed some amazing dresses,” said Julien.

“She asked if she could come in and see the dresses. So she came in and we couldn’t get rid of her – she was there for the DAY!

“I was like ‘are you leaving?’ and she was like ‘I need 8 dresses!’ then she picked all her dresses and we sent them all to her.”

So far so good, but on the day of the MOBOs, the 39-year-old decided she didn’t want any of the dresses she’d chosen anymore - and wanted different ones that she’d snapped on her phone.

“On the day of the awards, she rung us up to say she’d changed her mind and she wanted the other dresses [from the showroom],” revealed Julien.

“I was like ‘it’s tonight!’ and she just said she’d changed her mind. So all my girls had to send the dresses over to her and dress her for the night. That’s a typical Mel story.”

So there’s us thinking Mel is super-decisive on The X Factor. It sounds like she frets and worries as much as the rest of us!

And it turns out the Welsh fashion designer and the mum-of-three go way back – to when Scary Spice modelled for his London Fashion Week collection in 1999.

“Mel modeled in one of my shows once. She closed my show at a time when I was dressing the Spice Girls,” he said.

“They all sat watching the show and Mel closed the show in this crazy pink dress, with Kate Moss. She had this huge afro!”

We can only begin to imagine what Kate Moss was thinking at the time.

“I’ve known Mel for years. She’s always been supportive of my brand. She doesn’t live far from my studio in Notting Hill so it’s easy for her to pop in,” added Julien.

“She’s great, I love her and I think she’s doing a great job on the X Factor.”

He also suggested he could be dressing Mel B for her biggest fashion highlight of the year – The X Factor Final.

“I haven’t dressed her on the X Factor yet – we’re keeping that a surprise! We’re keeping the best for last,” he hinted.

And alongside his glamorous LFW range, could she be snapped wearing one of his jewellery designs on the show?

“I could see Mel B in a few pieces. Actually she’d like some of the animal pieces!” he said.

His QVC collection is split into three parts, Red Carpet, Pave and Animal, with the designer joking to us that he’s named the Animal Collection after a certain former X Factor judge.

“I’ve named it after Nicole Scherzinger because she’s in Cats. I’m going to send her some of that collection as an opening present, so I think she’s actually going to love that!” he said.
