X Factor 2014: Sarah-Jane Crawford Spills Cheryl And Mel B’s Beauty Secrets - EXCLUSIVE

TV presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford has spilled the beans on all the backstage beauty goss from The X Factor.

We had a chat with the gorgeous Xtra Factor host, 29, and discovered how she achieves her matte red lips, how to get Cheryl Fernandez-Versini’s hair and Mel B’s secret beauty obsession…

Red Lips Talk

You only need to do a Google image search of Sarah-Jane Crawford to see that she is a little obsessed with red lipstick.

The London-born beauty is very rarely snapped without her signature matte red pout – so we had to find out which lippie is her favourite. Can you blame us?

“I always go for MAC Ruby Woo because I like the matte look. If you’ve got really full lips, you don’t necessarily have to go for high colour and high shine,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“It’s good to make them look as big as possible but I don’t really need any help in that department!”

Sarah-Jane reckons matte lipstick is the way forward (a girl after our own heart) and that glossy lips are out for AW14.

“Matte looks really cool in pictures and it’s timeless,” she said.

“If you wanted something a bit more moisturising, Bobbi Brown do a good one called Old Hollywood and Smashbox have got a nice red. Sleek have got a nice red too.”

But if you thought it required a lot of effort, think again. She admitted she’s very lazy when it comes to make-up and applies lipstick straight from the bullet. Brave girl!

“I’m very lazy. I’m someone who likes to take the biggest shortcuts when it comes to hair and beauty. Unless someone’s doing it for me, I will do the bare minimum,” she said.

“Sometimes I’ll use Cherry Red lipliner from MAC if I’m on camera, otherwise my make-up artist will complain.

“But even if I’m getting my make-up done, I’ll apply my lipstick myself at the end.”

Cheryl’s Make-Up Secrets

It turns out we aren’t the only ones who have a borderline obsession with a certain Fernandez-Versini’s flawless face.

Sarah-Jane admitted she also gets make-up inspiration from Cheryl and Mel B and picks up a few beauty tips from the judges along the way.

“I always look at Mel and Cheryl and get inspired by their make-up. Mel’s got amazing, coffee coloured skin, and so I’m always looking how she brings the warmth out in her skin,” she said.

“Also, Cheryl’s got amazing lashes. Even when she’s not got false lashes on, they’re still really long. But she was telling me that it runs in her family anyway.”

Er, jealous much?

“But there are little things you can do [to re-create it], like using bottom lash mascara. So they both rub off on me a little bit I think,” she said.

“They also use a body glitter as well [Scott Barnes Body Bling] which gives you a bit of a glow.”

Anything that has ‘body bling’ in the title sounds like a must-buy to us. Does it come with J-Lo’s booty?

How To Get Cheryl’s Hair

It’s fair to say Cheryl has had quite the hair-volution since her Popstars: The Rivals days. From cornrows to bob to THAT ‘80s style on the X Factor USA, she’s certainly had her fair share of hair hits and misses.

But her ombre tresses are looking better than ever and it always gives us Saturday night hair inspiration – so we asked Sarah-Jane if she knew the secret to Cheryl’s look.

“I spoke to Cheryl’s hairdresser Paul Percival because I love her hair on the show. I asked him how got a certain curl and he showed me, which I then showed my hairdresser,” she said.

“It’s just in the way that you use the barrel of the tongs. It’s just wrapping the hair around a curling tong but not releasing the clamp down on it and letting it go, to create a beach wave effect.”

Oooh… Interesting. Consider it noted.

Mel B And The ‘Nailfie’

If 2014 was the year of the selfie – 2015 is set to be the year of the ‘nailfie’.

Sarah-Jane, who’s the face of MICRO Nail, said that showcasing your nail art on Instagram and hashtagging it #nailfie is the Next Big Beauty Trend.

“I read this thing the other day about people doing the ‘nailfie’ which is like the nail selfie. Mel B loves it!” she said.

“She’s got amazing nails all the time. There’s a manicurist in LA that she goes to who’s just incredible. Basically it’s all about getting a nice little Instagram shot of your nail art. It’s just sharing the artwork with everyone to give people ideas.”

Sarah-Jane’s Nailcare Routine

“During the week when I’m on Radio 1Xtra, I want to keep my nails natural and give them a rest,” she said.

“So I buff and shine them using MICRO Nail, which will last for ages - over a week on me.”

When she’s on camera, she goes for more of a trend-led style, although it depends on what she’s wearing on The Xtra Factor.

“There are a lot of nice, dark shades like Rouge Noir by Chanel and Vamp by Gelish. At the moment [on the show] it’s been purple or black,” she said.

“Sometimes I don’t have that much time [to do my nails] which is why MICRO Nail’s good. Then even if I’ve got no nail varnish on, they look good anyway.”
