Hair how-to: Rochelle Humes’ pretty fishtail plait at the One Direction This Is Us premiere

Get the look: Marvin Humes’ wife sported the stylish hairstyle at the world premiere of the band’s film in London’s Leicester Square, here’s how to try it at home

Rochelle Humes looked the picture of perfection on the One Direction: This Is Us red carpet last night.

The Saturdays singer sported a summery beauty look, with red lips, kohl-rimmed eyes and a loose fishtail plait.

The new mum’s on-trend hairstyle framed her face beautifully and showcased her statement necklace.

We spoke to industry expert, Errol Douglas MBE, about how to achieve Rochelle’s loose fishtail plait at home.

“Although this appears casual in its finish, fishtail for red carpet is best prepared from wet hair so that the pattern and condition shine through,” Errol told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

“Rochelle's naturally wavy locks have been prepped with a hydrating/defining product, which enables the hair to dry naturally but keep its shine and minimise frizz,” he told us, recommending Moroccanoil Curl Control Mousse to get The Saturdays star’s frizz-free look.

The haircare expert added that Rochelle’s loose interpretation of the fishtail is softer, which can be achieved with less tension on the hair.

Errol Douglas MBE’s easy guide to Rochelle Humes’ red-carpet fishtail

1)    When dry, lightly brush hair through with your hands, gathering in a central point on the nape of the neck.

2)    A fishtail plait begins with ensuring that there are TWO sections not THREE (this is a common misconception) – the “under/over” manoeuvre is crucial – it’s this that gives the fishtail pattern.

3)    Take two sections starting from just below the crown, and weave from under and wrap over until about an inch is left.

4)    To avoid too polished a finish, make like Rochelle and take a thicker strand braid at the top that tapers into a thinner finish. This just involves using more hair for the under/over from nape to midway down the braid, leaving less hair for the strands as the fishtail tapers to the end.

5)    A simple band to tie the end is all that’s required here to secure the fishtail, and the loose strand on the other side of the style completes the face frame and keeps this beautifully soft.

6)    Finish with a spray that retains movement with the hold, like Moroccanoil Luminious Hairspray.
