Children With Special Needs Transformed Into Superheroes In Inspiring Photo Project
A thought-provoking set of photographs has turned a group of special needs children into superheroes
Photographer Renee Bergeron is a mother of 14 children – one of whom who was born was a rare heart defect.
And it was this special child who inspired his artistic mum to wave her magic camera lens and transform a group of children suffering from all types of physical limitations into superheroes.
Bergeron created a whole album of snapshots of special needs children showing how strong and powerful they are – and each one is stunning. The children look confident and happy in every single photo, proving that whatever conditions they may be battling doesn’t define them.
“The Superhero Project was inspired by my own little super hero, Apollo” explains Renee, on her website.
“Apollo was born with a double aortic arch, a rare congenital heart defect. Apollo was diagnosed at 18 months old and has undergone two heart surgeries, had a g-tube placed and countless other medical procedures,” she continues.
Apollo, who’s now four years old, loved the photos so much that Bergeron wanted to offer her photographic skills to other children like her son.
“After seeing how much he enjoyed the superhero images of himself, The Superhero Project was born. I now share my gift of photograph with other families of children with special needs,” she says.
Avery was the first ‘superhero’ that Bergeron photographed. “She was born a preemie [premature baby] and is a twin,” writes Renee on her site. “Avery has gone through multiple brain surgeries and has a g-tube.”
Another tot captured is Victoria, who has a congenital femoral deficiency that means the femur in one leg is shorter than the other.
“She is a beautiful shining girl who will undergo a series of operations to lengthen her leg as she grows,” writes Renee.
Just a few of the other children captured include Cody, who was born with an extra chromosome and Melanie, who has been diagnosed with autism, epilepsy and sensory processing disorder.
