Zara Phillips is pregnant with her first child

Queen's granddaughter is expecting a baby with husband Mike Tindall

Zara Phillips is pregnant with her first child, it has been announced.

The Queen’s granddaughter is expecting her first child with husband Mike Tindall, Buckingham Palace said in a statement today.

"Mr and Mrs Mike Tindall are very pleased to announce that Zara Tindall is expecting a baby in the New Year,” wrote a statement on the British Monarchy’s website.

"The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, Mr Phillip and Mrs Linda Tindall, and members of both families are delighted with the news."

"This baby will be the first child for Mike and Zara and the third grandchild for the Princess Royal."

The 32-year-old Olympic horse enthusiast married former rugby player Mike at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh in July 2011.

Zara and Mike, 34, were spotted cheering on Andy Murray at the Men’s Singles final at Wimbledon yesterday. But there was no sign of a baby bump on Prince William's cousin – suggesting the horse rider is still in the early stages of her pregnancy.

It's likely that Zara is at least three months pregnant as it's unusual for couples to announce pregnancies earlier than this time. This is usually after the first scan, which can confirm the health of the baby. There's also an element of superstition as after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy the risk of miscarriage drops significantly.

Judging by her public appearances it also seems that Zara isn't experiencing the difficult start to her pregnancy that Kate Middleton went through - severe morning sickness which led to the Duke and Duchess announcing their pregnancy before the usual 12 week point.

Presuming this is the case, Zara is at the start of her second trimester (weeks 13 to 26), which is considered by many women to be the most enjoyable part of pregnancy. Morning sickness should have abated and some mums-to-be feel more energetic after the draining first trimester. It's also before the bump puts in much of an appearance so generally life can go on as usual.

The news of this other royal pregnancy comes in the same week that the Duchess of Cambridge is expected to have to the royal baby. The Duchess of Cambridge, married to Prince William, is thought to be due to give birth on July 13th.
