Do Women’s Magazines Need More Female Writers?

Do Women’s Magazines Need More Female Writers?

Here at Grazia, we’re proud of our team of talented, intelligent – not to mention fashion-forward - writers. And it’s worth mentioning that around 99% of them are women.

So why do we feel the need to say this? Because it seems we might be in the minority…

A debate has erupted this week about whether female writers are being under-represented on magazines. A study found that in one issue of Harpers Bizarre, just 16% of the content was apparently written by women. Which seems kind of crazy, given these magazines are for women. (We’re happy to report this week’s issue of Grazia was written almost entirely by women.)

Leading the debate is Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation. She says magazine editors ‘need to think hard about how we nurture a generation of women writers working across a range of issues.’

It’s not the only area where women are under-represented. A study of the UK’s national newspapers last year found in a typical month, 78% of articles were written by men. Er, hello…

So what do you think? Do magazines need more female writers? And how can female voices be promoted? We’d love to hear your opinion, so why not comment below or join the discussion on Grazia UK’s Facebook page.
