What Top Models Really Earn: How does Romeo Beckham's £45,000 A Day Compare?

Jaws dropped when it was revealed the 12-year-old son of Victoria and David Beckham was paid such a whopping amount to star in Burberry's latest ad...but is it really that crazy?

The middle Beckham son seems to have seriously lucked out with his Saturday job, especially when compared with big bro Brooklyn, 15, who's been knuckling down doing shifts in his local coffee shop for a piddly £2.68 an hour.

Twelve-year-old Romeo, on the other hand, recently raked in earnings of £45,000 for a single day's work on the new Burberry campaign, in which he plays a starring role.

Rumour has it his fellow Burberry models are less than impressed, as they command somewhat less for a few hours work - but then they don't have the good fortune to be the son of one of the most stylish and influential couples in the world.

Plus, they're probably not quite as adorable as mini Beckham.

And though for every minute the tween worked, he earned about £93.75 a minutes, let's not forget, like many models, it's a high figure because it's not regular work.

Come term time R-Becks is going to be just like any other 12-year-old, albeit with more savings in his university fund.

Sure, the highest superpaid models in the world are pulling in millions pretty much in their sleep but for most regular models, they get by thanks to well paid jobs such as runway shows or ad campaigns, that keep them through the leaner times - if they're lucky.

The top-earning supermodel in recent years is undoubtedly Gisele Bundchen who took home around $47million (£30million) this year (before taxes and fees). Which sort of brushes Romeo's big win under the rug.

Of course Gisele is a bit of a special case (the second top earner is Miranda Kerr with a tiny fraction of the Brazilian's fee - $7.2m/£4.5m), but plenty of models are earning more than £2m a year just for looking good.

Romeo's not the only Brit who won't get out of bed for less than, say,  £6,000.

Cara Delevingne's value hit the headlines this week with that very figure, after her tax return showed she banked £2.2m in just a year - equating to £6k a day. Not bad for a 22-year-old.

Kate Moss' fee-commanding powers are still pretty high, earning her a cool £7m and putting her at number four in the Forbes list of top model earners for 2014 - above youngster Delevingne, with whom she's starring in the latest Topshop campaign.

Interestingly, this year, five of the top 10 highest earners on said Forbes list are all present or former Victoria's Secret Angels - Adriana Lima, Hilary Rhoda, Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes. So it certainly seems that walking for the lingerie brand seriously ups earning power, suggesting getting semi-naked will boost your wage packet. Wonderful.

"Becoming an Angel significantly increases a model’s earning potential due to their visibility around the world,” Richard Habberley at DNA Model Management, which represents Ambrosio and Kroes, told WWD.

“It changes the girls’ careers completely.”

Case in point: Miranda Kerr.

But Romeo needs to invest his earnings wisely, as even the most successful male models earn a fraction of their female counterparts. In a rare reversal of the gender pay gap.

Sean O’Pry topped the Forbes list for the boys with a measly $1.5m (£90k) - nowhere near as much as the girls. And popular British model David Gandy is practically poverty-striken, taking home just  £88k.

But outside the very top level, modelling isn't half as lucrative as you might think. In fact once you take into account tax and agency commission, many struggle to break even, especially as some walk in runway shows for free for the 'exposure'.

But you gotta aim for the stars, right? Or at least the £££ signs.
