Victoria Beckham talks about being a working mum, admits ‘anyone who says it’s easy is lying’

Victoria Beckham has opened up about the difficulties she faces being a working mum.

David Beckham’s wife said that juggling a fashion label and four children is ‘difficult’ and ‘anyone who says it’s easy is lying.’

The former Spice Girl told Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman that her kids – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper - are her number one priority.

“I get up very early and go through spelling tests and times tables tests with the kids like any working mum,” she said at the Vogue Festival in London’s Southbank.

“But I am also up late because I have a baby and a 14-year-old who refuses to go to bed.”

The New York Fashion Week designer admitted that she has help in the form of a nanny – and someone who arranges her schedule around her children.

"Being a working mum you feel guilty every time you go out of the door when you have to work," she said.

“But it’s difficult juggling working, having the children, having a husband who travels. I do have a bit of help, I have a nanny, I can’t do it all myself,” she added.

“I really enjoy being a mum, I love them [her children] and I’d do anything for them. But I also love what I do. I think anyone who says it’s easy is lying.”

The Victoria by Victoria Beckham founder also talked about the challenges she faced starting up a label after the Spice Girls – but she’s now ‘really grateful’ for the support she’s had.

The mum-of-four – who recently re-located to London from Los Angeles – even hinted to showing her label at London Fashion Week in the future.

"I'd never say never to showing in London, but I've got a great thing going in New York. Maybe one day," she said.

So what’s next for the Brit-born designer whose collections have received critical acclaim?

"I am looking into [standalone] retail too - the e-commerce has been going really well. I get bored easily so it's time for something new,” she said.

Net-a-porter founder Natalie Massenet also spoke at the Vogue Festival and admitted to struggling as a working mother.

“People always ask is it hard being an entrepreneur and a mum and the answer is yes,” she said.

The US-born former fashion editor launched the site when she was pregnant, telling herself ‘if I could build a baby why not a business?’

But she now regrets the decision, saying it was not only hard work but ‘traumatising’ for her.

“I made a dreadful mistake or opportunity I’m not sure, of doing both of them at the same time, and it was enormously hard,” she said.

“I was so traumatised by having a baby and starting a business in the same year that it took six years for the next one to come along.”
