Back? Good.

With restaurants like Pizza Pilgrims and Mele e Pere in London serving the Italian sparkling wine on tap, the news that we could run out of prosecco in as little as two months is bad news. Really bad news.

Sales of prosecco went up by 55 per cent last year, marking it as the new drink of choice for us Brits who want to celebrate but have literally never bought a bottle of champagne in our lives.

Ninety-five per cent of prosecco quaffers see it as good value for money and they’re not wrong – right now you can get two bottles of the stuff for £12 in Sainsbury’s, compared to £30 for one bottle of Moët. It’s a no brainer, right?

But it’s exactly these money-saving deals that are the reason behind the proposed prosecco drought according to Andrew Shaw, buying director of Bibendum PLB.

“[The weather] has suppressed volumes and inflated prices, but the main issue has been demand-led due to the pressure on volumes,” he told Harpers.co.uk

“If you look at the UK and US boom, no one forecast the production and although they have increased yields, that won’t impact the market till the new harvest at the end of the year.”

Experts also warn that when the new harvest hits our shelves later this year, expect prices to reflect the increase in demand.
