The New Princess: William And Catherine Reveal Royal Baby Name

Our new little princess' name has been revealed as Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, with the royal couple choosing to continue their traditional family choices with another classic moniker for Prince George's little sister

After introducing their new little daughter to her great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have revealed her name and title to the waiting world.

The new baby Windsor is called Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, and will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

It's hardly surprisng that Charlotte was chosen - traditional names Alice, Elizabeth and Charlotte have been hot favourites ever since the royal couple announced they were expecting a second child.

And though Diana has been popular in public polls it's unsurprising the considerate parents have attempted to reduce comparisons to their little girls' much-loved grandmother, the late Princess of Wales, hopefully allowing little Charlotte to make her own way in the public's affections.

But fans of the royals and of Prince William's late mother will be pleased to see her remembered in the little princess' name.

According to bookies William Hill, Alice was the frontrunner in the lead up to the announcement, at 2/1 up until the last minute, followed by 3/1 Charlotte, 7/1 Victoria, 7/1 Olivia, 7/1 Elizabeth, 10/1 Diana, 12/1 Alexandra, 14/1 Mary, 25/1 Grace, 33/1 Caroline, 33/1 Frances, 50/1 Catherine, 50/1 Eleanor, 50/1 Rose.

For the second time, William and Kate have come up with names very quickly - especially by royal standards.

Princess Charlotte's dad William's name was not announced until a week after his birth, and the public had to wait a month before Prince Charles's name was revealed.

When it comes to name choices, the couple insisted they opted for George simply because they liked the name, despite it being the name of The Queen's father, King George VI (little Prince George's great great grandfather).

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge isn't the first Princess Charlotte Great Britain has seen. Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales was born in 1796 and was greatly mourned when she died at the age of just 21. She had been seen as a sign of hope for the future, as her father and grandfather, King George IV and III respectively were hugely unpopular.

And no doubt our new Princess Charlotte will be just as loved as her ancestor all those years ago.

What do you think of the new Princess of Cambridge's name?
