Reddit Users Reveal What They Were Dreaming About While They Were In a Coma

From the mundane to the surreal, and the humorous to the simply upsetting, Redditors who have been in a coma (medically induced or otherwise) opened up to others in the heartwarming thread on the social site

It was never going to be the most light-hearted of discussions.

But when one Reddit user asked if those that have been in a coma could share the dreams they had while they were ‘asleep’, it became quite the emotional thread.

One user described an incident three years ago where she was in a medically-induced coma following the birth of her son and overheard a discussion between two nurses.

They were talking about the chances of two of the patients on the ward dying soon – and they predicted one of them was going to be her.

She woke up. It wasn’t her. But she never forgot the conversation.

Another user wrote about how he was also put into a medically-induced coma after a car accident but dreamt that he was going about his daily business as normal – except for the fact that he couldn’t move properly because he’d been in a car accident.

Then, he dreamt that he should probably go to hospital, so he politely checked in before telling staff that really he wanted to leave.

“That's when the nurses and doctors descended upon me in a life saving frenzy. After that I opened my eyes,” he wrote.

In one of the more graphic descriptions, one user dreamt that he fell to his knees after a car accident, grabbed his throat and saw his esophagus on the ground.

He later learnt that was probably his vent tube coming out of his throat.

And it was a slightly off-topic discussion (but still pretty helpful), a number of users vividly described how they dreamt that they could feel different textures in their mouths.

“I once dreamt that I took a sip of water and the water turned to gravel in my mouth. I've also had dreams of struggling to breathe only to wake up half suffocated,” wrote one.

“I sometimes dream I'm coughing out/vomiting thick, warm, cotton-like material. Always wake up fine, and I never can figure out what it means, if anything,” wrote another.

It turns out that means 'spiders are crawling around in your mouth when you sleep' - thanks for that!

“Had a dream like this one time, in the dream a spider was going down my throat which startled me awake only to find an ACTUAL SPIDER WAS GOING DOWN MY THROAT,” wrote one.

“At this point I couldn't cough it up so I just drank a bunch of water and down the hatch it goes. Still makes me cringe just thinking about it...”

Nice.

There were some slightly more humorous posts in the thread – including one about a man that dreamt a bear was nicking his crisps.

“Not me, but my father. My father was in a coma for three months and had a repeated "dream" of a bear stealing his potato chips,” wrote one user in one of the most popular posts of the discussions.

But others were refreshingly honest, admitting they couldn’t remember anything at all.

“I was in a coma for 8 weeks. I remember nothing,” wrote one.

“I appreciate this. Not everyone has a grand story, and it's important that people know this,” replied another.

We couldn't agree more.
