Rebecca Adlington Wants A Water Baby: What Does A Water Birth Involve?

Congratulations are in order for the Olympic swimmer, who's expecting her first child with new husband Harry Needs

Rebecca Adlington has revealed her desire to give birth to a waterbaby, as she plans the arrival of her first baby.

The former Olympic gold medal winning swimmer has discussed her dream to have a water birth as she announced her pregnancy, admitting that the baby was conceived on the pair's honeymoon.

"The due date is June 4 so, yes, we must have conceived on the first day of our honeymoon in Venice," she told Hello! Magazine.

Harry added: "But we’re not the Beckhams - we won’t be calling the baby Venice."

Rebecca also said that sticking to her watery roots, she'd love a waterbirth.

"A few friends have recommended it. I would like the birth to be as natural as possible, but you can’t really plan it, can you?"

The announcement comes after Rebecca had her first scan, showing the baby is developing normally. But she admitted that she was nervous beforehand.

"Thank goodness everything is OK. It was such a relief to see the heartbeat.

"I think you feel such a responsibility as the woman because you are the one looking after the baby.

"So Harry was more excited but I was more nervous."

Water Birthing

A water birth is when a woman gives birth in (of course) water - usually in a birthing pool at a hospital or birth centre (though you can buy or hire one for home use).

It's popular as many women have reported the warm water relaxing and soothing them during labour, and even reducing the intensity and pain of contractions.

Floating in water can also make moving about easier so you can switch positions, keep active during labour and get into the right position when the baby really starts to come.

It's hardly surprising that Becky is keen to try water birthing, after all she's obviously very comfortable in the water and with the sport in his or her genes from both parents, being born in the pool will help the birth go swimmingly, we're sure.

Yes, pun intended.
