Nicole Kidman wows at Cannes in Anne Hathaway's original Oscars dress, bet she wishes she'd worn it now

Les Miserables actress could have escaped a wardrobe malfunction if she'd have worn the dress debuted by Nicole Kidman

Anne Hathaway was probably left wishing she had stuck to her first choice as she watched Nicole Kidman steal the show on the Cannes 2013 red carpet last night.

The Australian actress, who has resided on the Film Festival's panel, was the belle of the ball in an intricate, high-necked ivory lace dress by Valentino Haute Couture.

But while the 45-year-old made the gown look like it was made for her, it was originally due to be worn by Anne at this year's Oscars.

The Les Miserables actress had changed her dress for the event last minute, opting for a silk pink Prada column dress.

Yet Anne was probably left wishing she'd never had a change of heart, seeing as the gown famously caused her an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction on the night.

The halterneck pink gown left little to the imagination, with the seams at the bust highlighting the fact she wasn't wearing a bra - meaning her nipples were clearly visible under the material.

And the embarrassment didn't stop there either, as Valentino had already announced Anne would be wearing their gown for the event, forcing the poor star to issue an apologetic statement to explain.

Anne revealed she'd swapped the dress after hearing someone else was due to wear something similar, which is why she plumped for the pink satin gown.

The intricate flower-detailed gown has finally had its moment in the spotlight though, earning Nicole the best dressed title as she walked the red carpet hand-in-hand with her fellow Cannes juror, Life of Pi director Ang Lee.

The 45-year-old star teamed her ethereal gown with drop earrings and a low chignon, looking every inch like the late princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, who she portrayed for an upcoming biopic last year.

Nicole has set the bar high in the style stakes since arriving at the festival in the south of France, for which she and her fellow jurors are tasked with choosing the top Palme d'Or prize.
