Miracle Baby Survives Twin’s Miscarriage And Abortion Medication Given To Protect Mum From Infection

Michelle Hui was told she miscarried twins, but while one of the babies died, the other survived…

Michelle Hui’s world was turned upside down when she miscarried on her way to work.

But little did she know that she was actually expecting twins – and one of them went on to survive, even after she took abortion pills prescribed to avoid infection.

The 31-year-old bank worker from County Kildare, Ireland, was six weeks pregnant when she started bleeding and went to hospital, fearing she was miscarrying her baby.

She had to endure five separate tests by two different doctors before she was given the heart-breaking news that she had lost her baby.

Michelle then had to have a medical abortion to prevent any infection and was given abortion pills to expel the foetus from her body.

But devastatingly, further rests revealed the mum had blood clots in her womb which had to be removed. But this bad news turned to joy when doctors spotted a tiny heartbeat.

They were astonished to discover that Michelle had been pregnant with twins – and one of the babies had survived the miscarriage AND abortion pills.

"The miscarriage and abortion were absolutely horrific. The ten days between the miscarriage and going back to the hospital were just a blur,” she said.

“But then I saw this little heartbeat. I thought it couldn’t be right. After all we had been through, I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

“The doctor went out and came back in with a more senior doctor and he did the scan again and he said, ‘You are not going to believe it, we’ve got a heartbeat’. It was the best feeling ever.”

She continued with the pregnancy as normal and in February, Michelle and her husband Ross, 33, welcome little Megan into their lives.

The miracle baby weighed six pounds and has been thriving at home with her four-year-old sister Mya and brother Noah, two.

But although this story has a happy ending, the mum-of-three is angry that doctors didn’t spot the surviving foetus before she had the medical abortion – which increases the risk of birth defects in the baby.

“As happy as I was, I was angry they had missed her on the scans. They said with all the blood and clots it must have created shadows so they couldn’t see her,” she said.

The case is so rare that it’s been written up in medical journals, while campaigners say there is no medical reason behind it and the family had a case of good luck.

“I have very, very occasionally heard of rare cases of a miscarriage of one baby, and then seeing another on the scan,” said Katherine Hales from the Association of Radical Midwives, which campaigns for improved NHS maternity care.

“But I have never heard of this happening. I can’t think of a medical reason for it to happen – it is just luck.”

It sounds like little Megan truly is a miracle baby.
