How To Apply The Metallic Smoky Eye Beauty Trend – SS12

Backstage at Giorgio Armani, slightly dewy flawless finish skin and lips whipped into shape with little more than balm were deemed the perfect backdrop for misty metallic eyes. Silvery shadow was swept up towards brow bones before ghostly greys were etched into creases to add a dose of high octane drama.

Marrying two beauty trends, the look was finished with a flick - a subtle nod to the season’s feline cat eyes - and framed with brows that were brushed into place and shaped with light pencil strokes to anchor the look.

With three sooty shades to select, Dior’s textured trio offers a foolproof way to give the classic black smoky eye spring’s molten edge.

Blend the silvery shade across lids up towards brow bones to give the wraith-like finish spotted at Armani before working the grey shade into creases and winging outwards. Add sparkle to your lash line by wetting an eyeliner brush to transform the flecked, midnight shadow into eyeliner and sketch across upper lids to add a feline flourish.

Illuminated with pearlescent pigments, Chanel’s latest crease-resistant eyeshadow has a creamy gel-like consistency that can be buffed away to unveil a subtle wash of steamy colour or built up to give a rich smoky texture.

At Dsquared2, high-shine metallics in petrol hues were melded across the whole eye area and blended into the peach blusher that was circled on cheeks.

To ramp up the grunge factor, flaws were erased with foundation and skin contoured with illuminator, while full, untamed brows augmented the well-worn effect.

Don’t let beauty rules dictate which products you use to recreate the trend. Able to adapt to any finish you require, from bold block colour to smudgy sheer shades, cream eyeliner makes the perfect product for casting a smoky mirage across eyes.

Our Beauty Editor Kim Parker loves using Yves Saint Laurent’s cream eyeliner in place of an shadow. ‘This creamy, stay-the-day eyeliner also does double duty as a long-lasting metallic eyeshadow. Easy to blend, budge-proof and its flattering bronze hue is bang on trend,’ Parker says.

Proving you can mix your metals, layering various metallic eyeshadows was the order of the day at Gianfranco Ferrè’s summer show.

With little more than a tinted moisturiser and rose blush on skin, the focus was firmly fixed on the eyes. Coppery colours formed the basis of the models' smoky stares, while silvery accents were used to highlight brow bones and illuminate eyes, and charcoal the colour of choice to contour.

Gliding onto skin to deliver an intense shock of colour, sketching and blending this crease-resistant eyeliner across lids is just the thing for crafting the ghostly metallic mists that were spotted at the spring summer 2012 shows.

Packed with flecks of gold, this daytime-friendly eyeliner adds a shot of metal without too much shimmer and shine.

There’s no need to shun eyeshadow for fear of being heavy handed, Topshop’s long-lasting crayons pack a pigment punch and effortlessly allow you to recreate the catwalk’s metallic smoky eyes without the need for brushes.

Paint straight onto eyelids from the pen and blend with fingertips to give lids a crease-free metallic glaze before working black gel eyeliner into your upper lash line to add depth and smoke.

At Pucci, natural finish skin paved the way for gilded glazes created by blending sooty shades with gold cream eyeshadow. Black gel kohl was used to line and define eyes while lashings of mascara ensured a full flutter.

Nod to the catwalk and follow suit by blending black with metallic shades for extra impact this spring.

Regardless of the eyeshadow shade you select, blending with black is key to add definition to your smoky stare and with its soft, gel-like texture Avon’s creamy kohl can’t be beaten. Fill in your waterline and thicken your lash line to make eyes pop.

A veil of black lashes is the easiest way to tie up the trend. With its full, round brush, Bourjois’ Glamour Max mascara is one of our favourites for thickening lashes in an instant.

Enriched with black pearl extracts to enhance the midnight hue, it won’t clump no matter how many coats you apply.
