Matt Damon Asks Us To ‘Buy A Lady A Drink’: Leads Clean Water Campaign

New campaign set to help women around the world who spend 200 million hours a day, collectively, fetching water for their families.

Matt Damon’s Water.org and Stella Artois have partnered up to help the millions of women around the world who don’t have basic access to clean water.

The new campaign asks us to ‘Buy a lady a drink’ and donate to the Oscar winner’s charity by buying a limited edition glass chalice.

Available online, the chalices cost £4.50 and 100 per cent of the cost will go to projects providing water resources for people in developing countries.

Damon and fellow co-founder Gary White founded the charity in 2009 and adopted ‘safe water and the dignity of a toilet for all’ as their mantra.

The charity has projects across the developing world in countries like Haiti, Uganda and Bangladesh but this new drive focuses primarily on the ways in which a basic lack of water affects women in particular.

Around the world, the burden of providing water for the family falls overwhelmingly on women.

In fact, women spend 200 million hours a day finding and fetching water, which is often contaminated with any number of potentially deadly diseases.

Every year 3.4 million people die from a water related disease, the same diseases that kill a child every minute.

As well as a basic lack of drinking water, sanitation is also a major issue for women in the developing world.

Insufficient and sometimes non-existent toilets make personal hygiene for millions of women a daily struggle.

According to Water.org, half of girls worldwide attend schools without toilets.

This lack of privacy causes many girls to actually drop out of education once they hit puberty, locking women in a cycle of poverty.

By providing women with the means to obtain clean water safely, Water.org is working to help empower women in the developing country.

When they don’t have to worry about basic water and sanitation, they can focus on living their lives.

The chalices go on sale today and you can learn more about Water.org here.
