Marmite And Pot Noodle Chocolate Eggs To Go On Sale For Easter

Brands reckon launching chocolate eggs linked to popular savoury foods will help broaden the appeal of Easter Eggs - but Pot Noodle? Really?

Marmite sure is a popular beast. Its 'love it or hate it' slogan is one of the advertising world's greats and in 2013 is was the second most sold spread in the UK after Rowse's honey.

And now it's set to become a chocolate egg for the first time as manufacturers have decided to capitalise on its popularity this Easter - aiming to 'broaden the appeal of the Easter Egg'.

And it's not the only savoury food to get the chocolate treatment. Pot Noodle branding is also going to be used to sell eggs, but fortunately there will be no noodles in the actual chocolate itself.

Instead, the completely normal milk chocolate egg will sit in a porcelain Pot Noodle branded mug and once the choc's been eaten, fans will be able to eat their, er, delicious snack from a sturdier receptacle all year round. The joy!

However, the Marmite egg will indeed contain the yeasty black stuff we are so fond of/think is the Devil's nectar. A chocolate bar that contains a hint of Marmite is already on the market and is described as 'A perplexing treat that bewilders the tastebuds'.

But it's not such a strange idea. We're increasingly cottoning on to the idea of mixing savoury with sweet  - from adding chocolate to meat dishes such as Mexican mol

é to sprinkling a little salt on our caramels.

Just don't forget it...

In case you need a refresher, Marmite is a thick black spread made from yeast that's been a favourite in this country since the early 1900s when it was first created using yeast from the Bass brewery.

The company behind the new eggs, Kinnerton’s spokesperson Rachel Wyatt said: "Easter isn’t just for kids. We want to bring fun to Easter fixtures by using these two iconic brands.

"The Marmite Easter egg, which shoppers will either love or hate, combines Marmite with chocolate."

Both eggs will be on sale from February for a fiver apiece. But will they be able to compete with the Buttons, Mars, Smarties and Gallaxys of the Easter landscape?

Time will tell.
