Style Director Belinda Earl reveals first range from Marks and Spencer since she was tasked with turning around the brand’s fortunes

M&S has revealed its first AW13 collection under the brand’s new Style Director.

Belinda Earl was tasked with turning around the fortunes of the high-street brand – and the first range under her leadership has finally dropped.

The M&S AW13 collection is bang-on-trend for this season, with key looks including monochrome, leather, sequins and brocade print giving it an opulent feel.

Shapes are strong and lines are futuristic – with an ankle-length white coat teamed with chic black ankle boots.

In another shot for the autumn/winter 2013 campaign, the model wears a stylish checked coat with leather trousers and kitten heels.

Oxblood is a key shade for the collection with cosy, roll-neck knits and biker jackets made in the colour.

Leopard print makes an appearance in the range, with handbags, jackets and scarves adorned in the classic animal-print design.

And whilst shades are mainly dark and muted in accordance with traditional autumn/winter trends, there are some pops of colour including cobalt blue and vivid red to brighten it up.

But it’s the gold sequined frock that really caught our eye and at £100 it’s perfect for those Christmas parties.

It seems the collection has taken a much smarter, grown-up direction in the hopes its past customers – or people who simply buy the M&S food and nothing else – will return.

As much as the clothing look and feels more expensive, it may well be the extortionate prices - £349 for a coat and £399 for a dress - that deter people from shopping in-store.

"There's more of a role than ever for us to lead in fashion and design,” said M&S Style Director Belinda Earl, who formerly worked at Debenhams and Jaeger.

“We are not afraid to raise the taste bar. You will be seeing a lot more fashion and a lot more of Marks and Spencer at fashion weeks,” she added.

“It is fashion with a capital F.”
