Why Kimberley Walsh Should Be Every Mum’s Role Model

The former Girls Aloud singer has an applaudable attitude to baby weight gain and is happy to admit that parenting isn’t as easy as it’s cracked up to be

It’s not often that a celebrity mum says something we can relate to – particularly when it comes to post-pregnancy weight loss.

After all, they tend to have access to personal trainers and top-of-the-range gym gear to make their mission to shed the baby weight that bit easier.

And then they parade their teeny tiny figures in bikinis for the rest of us to despair over – and wonder how they managed to get rid of their baby belly.

So it’s always comforting when a famous mum admits that getting back in shape ISN’T all that easy – or all that important. Kimberley Walsh is one such woman who’s fast becoming every mother’s idol after admitting that she didn’t spring back into shape within five minutes of giving birth – and there’s no shame in that.

The former Girls Aloud singer, who gave birth to her first child with finance Justin Scott in September, has taken her time slimming back down and says it’s a good thing.

“It’s good for other women to see that not everybody just snaps back straight away,” the new mum revealed in the June issue of Mother&Baby magazine, on sale now.

“I think I’m a positive role model to other women who might find comfort in the fact that I did not spring back into shape.”

It’s not only her weight that Kimberley is happy to discuss openly. She’s spoken about her son Bobby’s traumatic birth and reveals that she always planned to have an epidural when she went into labour.

“Bobby turned at the last minute making it virtually impossible to push him out,” she says. “The doctors had to use forceps to move his head down and when he came out his face was looking up at us.

“I opted for an epidural before he was born. It would have been absolutely horrific without one. If I had panicked I would have ended up with a C-section and it was very touch and go.”

Breastfeeding has been an issue for Kimberley, too – which a lot of new mums will be able to relate to.

“Bobby wouldn’t latch onto my boob which I found very distressing,” she says. “It turned out he was tongue tied and so they snipped his tongue. That really helped but it was hard for him to learn (to feed) because it was new to him.”

Tongue-tie affects more babies than you may think and means there’s a tight piece of skin between the underside of their tongue and the floor of their mouth. It’s not always picked up on and can affect a baby’s feeding, making it hard for them to latch on to their mother’s nipple when breastfeeding.

If it does affect feeding, the tongue-tie can be divided by cutting the tight piece of skin in a simple and virtually painless procedure – which is what Kimberley’s son Bobby had done.

Of course, Kimberley’s not the only celebrity mum to share her inspiring take on baby weight. Drew Barrymore admits that her post-baby body is “saggy and weird” (no surprise after having two children) yet she’s learning to love it regardless.
