Katie Hopkins Lashes Out At Pregnant Women Who Use Pain Relief During Labour: They Aren’t ‘Proper Mums’

The sharp-tongued columnist apparently has a problem with pain relief. Never popped a paracetamol, eh Katie?

Katie Hopkins has blasted single mums, overweight children and the idea of paternity leave and now she’s turned her steely gaze on pregnant women who choose to take pain relief during labour.

The mum of three, who claims she didn’t use any pain relief during her trio of childbirths, caused outrage after telling LBC Radio that you’re a ‘more powerful woman if you give birth naturally without pain relief.’

Boasting that one of her children weighed 14lb when born, she said, “I think it does toughen you up rather. I do feel like a proper mum because I gave birth to my children without much fuss.

“Ultimately birth is a physical process… and sometimes I do think maybe mums need to get on with it a bit.”

And that’s not all the controversial columnist had to say on the matter. “I certainly feel kind of vindicated by the fact that I have had no pain relief for any of my children and it makes me feel that there is nothing that can hurt so much again. It does make me feel kind of invincible in some ways.

“Toughen up, man up, take it like a man [although I’m not sure men would take it that well] and actually just give birth naturally because it’s fairly simple.

“All you have to do it push.”

While we’re glad Katie clearly had three smooth labours, there are numerous reasons why women opt for pain relief methods during childbirth. The pain of labour differs from woman to woman, and some find it all too much to cope with and need a little relief.

Unsurprisingly, Katie’s latest tirade has received plenty of backlash – mainly from angry mums.

“Women doesn’t need to go through awful unnesesscary pain to qualify as sincere capable mothers!” @LailaAlodaat tweeted.

Another Twitter user, @leahthetourist, wrote, “This makes women feel guilty. Wouldn’t have a filing without pain relief, why a baby! It’s available, why not use modern medicine.”

Pain relief is already a very debatable topic. Some women see no reason why not to use it if it helps get the baby out safely, but others worry about the potential side effects that come with strong medicines like these.

Some experts advocate natural pain relief methods, including gas and air and hypnobirthing. The NHS advises that women keep an open mind when it comes to pain relief and follow their doctor or midwife’s suggestion to help with the baby’s safe delivery.
