Katie Hopkins’ Child Obesity Solution: Send All Fat Children To Special Sports Schools

The outspoken columnist thinks she has a way out of the UK’s child obesity issue; send all overweight children to special schools to keep them fit

We all know that Katie Hopkins isn’t afraid to speak her mind and the mum of three has continuously targeted other parents for what they name their children and how they raise them.

But while her latest tirade is, as her rants tend to be, a tad OTT and segregating, she’s broached a subject that the government and health officials agree needs to be tackled – child obesity.

The columnist’s latest comments are aimed at overweight children and their families, who she says make her so angry her “teeth itch and nipples twizzle.”

“The most upsetting thing of all is a fat child,” the controversial writer wrote in her column for Now! magazine.

“I’ve always said that a fat child lives in the shadow of a fat parent. The fat kids go through the school gates and there’s the fat mum in the car, who doesn’t bother to get out, still wearing her pyjamas… and that really does my head in.”

Katie’s answer to this issue? Send fat children to “special sports schools.” She reckons that in England, we’re far “too soft” on overweight children.

“We seem to think it’s okay that people are pureeing KFC to spoon-feed to their babies,” she wrote.

“There’s loads of fat kids and we don’t say anything because that would be fat-shaming, or bullying… well, I disagree completely.”

Whatever her thoughts, you can’t argue that Katie hasn’t put her money where her mouth is. Earlier this year, she piled on the pounds to show overweight families that losing weight is possible, as long as you keep at it.

The 39-year-old businesswoman put on four stone in three months for her TV progamme ‘Making Me Fat’, and then proceeded to lose it.

The UK’s Child Obesity Issue
Katie’s comments may be too harsh but she does have a point. In the UK, there is a growing child obesity problem and a shocking one in 10 four year olds are overweight.

Figures published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre also predict that in five years, obesity rates will double and one in five children will leave primary school clinically obese.

MPs say it is “inexplicable” that the NHS in England spends more on bariatric surgery than measures to prevent obesity.

The government hopes its new Change4Life programme will help families be more mindful of what they’re eating – and how much they’re exercising.

“Our Change4Life campaign has been providing widespread free advice on healthy eating and exercise, and nearly two million more people now play regular sport than 10 years ago,” the Department of Health for England said in a statement.

“Working with the food industry, we have cut calories, salt and fat in food and awe have given £8.2bn to local authorities to tackle public health issues like obesity.”
