Kate Winslet Talks Divorce: It Can Be Good For Children As It Teaches Them How To ‘Struggle’

The world-famous actress has been through two divorces and is a mum of three – the most recent of which was born just over a year ago

Around 42 per cent of marriages are expected to end in divorce, making it an adjustment that a lot of families have to make – and a lot of children have to get used to. But is it, on any level, good for children? Kate Winslet thinks so.

The Oscar-winning actress, who has three children, has been divorced twice but says she’s turned all the “bad bits” into positive experiences for her family, she told Harper’s Bazaar.

“I think it’s very important to teach your children to struggle on some level,” said Kate. “I would honestly say that I wouldn’t change a thing. Even the bad bits.

“It doesn’t matter how crap times have been, they all matter, because those things shape who you are. And if you don’t like who you are, well, then you’re ------ really, aren’t you?”

Kate’s a mum to 14-year-old daughter Mia, from her marriage to Jim Threapleton and 11-year-old son Joe, who she had while married to Sam Mendes.

The star, 39, also has a baby son, Bear, with her current hubby Ned RocknRoll, who’s Sir Richard Branson’s nephew.

Since having her third child, Kate has spoken out the pressure put on mums to lose their pregnancy weight – and says that she didn’t diet and doesn’t want to be “one of those ‘Oh wow she’s back in shape after 12 weeks’ women.”

“When I read things like that, I just think, ‘Oh for ----‘s sake, that’s actually impossible,” says Kate.

“Life is just too short to be spending time focusing on things like that. I want to keep my health and my sanity and be well fed and happy. I was nowhere near my pre-pregnancy shape when Bear was 12 weeks old – I was breastfeeding, apart from anything else, and hungry all the time – and now would I have wanted to be.

“And, do you know what? My body will never go back to what it was, and I wouldn’t expect it to after three babies.”

Separated Parents Who Appear To Have Made It Work
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin hit the headlines when they announced their “conscious uncoupling” last year.

The couple, who are parents to Apple and Moses, have worked to turn their break up into a positive, with Gywneth admitting, “We’ve worked really f**king hard to get to [this] point. But we’re very, very close and it’s so nice.”

The actress even went as far as to say, “I feel like it’s, in a way, the relationship we were meant to have.”

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom’s split in 2013 also shocked fans – particularly as they had a two-year-old son, Flynn, to consider.

But the parents have spoken up in support of each other more than once with Miranda saying, “We still love and care for each other deeply.”
