Indian Student Drags Her Sex Attacker To Police By His Hair

Pradnya Mandhare took matters into her own hands when she was assaulted in Mumbai while an onlooking crowd did nothing

A 20-year-old woman has been hailed as ‘fearless’ after she dragged her sexual attacker to the police by his hair.

Pradnya Mandhare was sexually assaulted by a man while waiting for a train in Mumbai, but instead of ignoring the incident the student decided to bring her attacker to justice.

While waiting at the busy Kandivli station in the Indian city, Pradnya was touched ‘inappropriately’ by a 25-year-old man who proceeded to grab her when she tried to get away from him.

"When I was waiting at the platform for another train, this visibly drunk person came to me and touched me inappropriately. When I tried to avoid him, he grabbed me. I was shocked for a couple of seconds, but then I started hitting him with my bag,” the student told NDTV.

"Kandivli station is always crowded and so many men and women saw the druggie try to attack me, but no one came forward to help.

“I caught him by his hair and dragged him to the Government Railway Police.

"Dragging him by the hair and walking was tough, because he was trying to escape and I was afraid he would attack me. He kept telling me not to drag him along and that he would come with me on his own, but I did not let go. I finally managed to hand him over to the police."

The police have since confirmed that 25-year-old drug addict Chavan Chowdee was arrested after the event.

Rape in India has been the subject of numerous documentaries in recent months.

‘India’s Daughter’, the BBC report into the brutal gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi in 2012, has been banned in India while Vice produced a documentary looking into the country’s ‘rampant rape problem’.

The low rate of reporting rape in the country has been blamed on a culture of shame surrounding the victims but Pradnya has called for an end to placing the blame at the feet of women.

“Every woman should fight back in such cases and they should not keep quiet.

“Women should raise their voice and teach such people a lesson. Women are not objects for anyone to touch at will.”
