Holy Avocado! Mayo, Healthy Brownies, Face Cream - Is There Anything This Fruit Can't Do?

The avocado might just be the MOTHER of all of mother nature's inventions...

Avocados might just be the greatest thing to come out of the world's good earth.

The little creamy fruit (yep, it's a fruit, from a tree) houses around 20 vitamins, including B vitamins to help you fight disease and infection and also vitamin C to stave off colds and prevent cancer.

They're full of the good kind of fat (monounsaturated), that lowers cholesterol and they're low in sugar and high in fibre.

Yes, they are quite calorific, so you shouldn't be guzzling more than one a day for sure, but considering all the health benefits, swapping out other less useful calories in favour of avo calories is just about the best thing you could do.

Mayonnaise

Today we've learned that a clever clogs brand in the US has decided to push out an avocado oil MAYONNAISE. Yep, all the creamy goodness of everyone's favourite condiment next to ketchup, with the added bonus of smokey avocado oil.

Can we scoop it out of the jar?

Primal Kitchen Mayo
Primal Kitchen Mayo

Sadly, the Primal Kitchen product is only available on Thrive Market at the moment, which doesn't ship outside of the US.

HOWEVER, because we're very good to you, we've found a recipe for avocado oil mayonnaise so that you can make it yourself at home:

1 free-range egg

1 free-range egg yolk

1 teaspoon dijon mustard

1.5 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

3/4 cups (about 500ml) avocado oil

1 pinch sea salt

Blend everything except the avocado oil in a food processor for about 30 seconds, then slowly drizzle in the oil while mixing. Then taste and season until you're happy.

And here is a bunch of other cool stuff that you can do with avocados, in case you weren't already aware of how incredibly versatile and useful they are!

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is super yum just on it's own. It has a deliciously smoky aroma to it, making it a brilliant accompaniment to salads and light pasta dishes.

Don't slather it on, of course. Always use it in moderation, but with its rich flavour, you won't need much anyway.

This is the Chosen Foods brand, but you can pick up a bottle of this glorious stuff at any Whole Foods store, or even on Ocado.com for £4.30.

Avo Oil For Beauty

Don't just stick it in your salads, you can stick it on your face too.

Those same fatty acids that are good for your cholesterol, are also good for your skin.

You can either use this Naissance oil as a massage oil, or you can add a few drops of it to any of your regualr moisturisers, to add some extra thick, velvety oomph to them and up the hydration factor.

We've been following nutritionist Jill on her Slim Fit Bean Instagram account for a while now and we love playing around with some of the things she posts on there, as they're always super healthy.

She looks like this, just FYI:

And recently she posted these avocado brownies, which we've tried out and they're great.

Here's her recipe:

1 mashed avocado

1/4 cup raw coco powder

1/2 cup blended figs or dates (or 1 cup raw honey)

1 egg

1/3 cup almond flour (though you could use oat flour)

1 mashed banana

1/2 tbsp xantham gum to make it all stick together (available on Ocado for £2.50)

1/3 cup dark chocolate (crushed into chips).

To prepare: preheat the oven to 180 degrees, on the fan setting. Blend the avocado, coco, fig/date paste, egg, banana until smooth. Mix in the remaining ingredients but don't overmix. Bake in muffin tins for 15-20 mins.

Enjoy!

Jill has a number of eBooks out, for those of you wanting more of her recipes.
