Happy Grandparents’ Day! Why Nan And Granddad Are The Best

It’s officially Grandparents’ Day today and although it’s probably just another made up holiday designed to get us to buy stuff, we think it’s about time we paid homage to all the Nannas and Granddads out there.

Grandparents are dependable. There are just certain things you can always count on when it comes to the old folks…

1.    Unlike your mum and dad, your grandparents are like legally obligated to be nice to you forever.

2.    They’ll always have a packet of Custard Creams in the biscuit tin. But never chocolate Digestives. What do you think, they’re made of money?

3.    They will always try and give you pocket money. Even when you’re 35.

4.    They’re the only people still buying Jelly Babies. Bassetts owe the grandparents of the world A LOT.

5.    When you introduce them to your new boyfriend or girlfriend, they never fail to say the most embarrassing thing that comes to mind. Yes definitely, let’s talk about that time I wet myself at my Holy Communion. Thanks Nan.

6.    They are guaranteed to heckle you during your wedding speech.

7.    They act all sweetness and light, but you know you got your taste for Jameson whisky from your little, old grandma who could drink you under the table any day.

8.    No-one makes a cup of milky tea like Granny. In fact, they won’t let you use the kettle until you’re 18 in case you burn yourself.

9.    They will never master anything more technological than tuning the radio, or “the wireless”, to Radio 4.

10.    There are some that branch out into the world of smartphones. Their autocorrect fails always seem to be funnier/more awkward than anything you could accidentally send your mum.

11.    For those that dare to go “online”, there is truly nothing better than a grandparent on Facebook. You think your mum likes everything you do? Wait until Nanna finds that album from your second year of uni when you and your mates had a dinner party that turned into an episode of Skins. “SO GLAD TO SEE YOU’RE HAVING FUN DARLINGXXX”

12.    Oh yeah, THEY’RE NOT GREAT AT TURNING OFF CAPS LOCK.

13.    Now that Facebook let’s you tag people in posts, an adorable amount of grandmas have accidentally tagged themselves as hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash. There’s a whole Tumblr site dedicated to them.

14.    Above all, you can always count on nan and granddad to pull some shapes on the dance floor.
