How to recreate the Great Gatsby beauty looks

Experts explain how you can get the Great Gatsby book with glamorous makeup PLUS win amazing prizes

Dust down your dresser and bring the powder puffs out of storage because this spring, it's all about Great Gatsby glamour.

But if you can't wait until the film hits the big screen later this week, we've spoken to the a makeup expert to find out how to recreate the look.

The good news? It's a look that’s relatively low maintenance, with neutral eye shadows and bold lips taking centre stage.

"Nude eye shadows with bold lips define this look," explains Karim Sattar, make up artist for Dr.Hauschka Skin Care. "There's no real need for cheek products - it’s all about eyes and lips."

This look is perfect for anyone who's shied away from the bright eye shadow, which have been so popular recently. "The eyes are very neutral and flattering, with just a hint of subtle definition," says Karim.

"I'd suggest pairing an ivory eye shadow with a beautiful elongated lash line - cheat your way to fabulously flirtatious lashes which appear denser and longer with liquid eyeliner." However, the look for lips is slightly less low-maintenance.

"For lips, go for a bold aubergine or red but for a more understated look, apply less lip liner but build up lip colour for that hint of drama."

The Gatsby glamour look is all about poreless, flawless perfection. Apply plenty of moisturiser, and use a good quality primer, such as Benefit's The Porefessional, beneath your foundation.

"With 1920’s glamour, the hair frames the face, so make sure your complexion is glowing and flawless," says Karim.

"A spritz of facial toner will set your make-up ensuring it stays looking fresh from the moment your make-up is applied." It's also worth paying extra attention to your eyebrows - Gatsby glamour means well-defined brows (take note, Cara Delevingne!) shaped into a beautiful arch.

"I love the dramatic eyebrows of this era – think Marlene Dietrich!" says Karim.

"The shape of your eyebrows can change your whole face and dramatically open your eyes.

Shape your brows into a beautiful curve, with the highest point sitting directly above the iris of your eye, then fill in any gaps in the hairs using a matte brown eye shadow, which corresponds to your hair colour.

Give the end of the brow a defined point for a bold but authentic 1920’s look."

Avoid filling in brows with pencil, and opt for a powder, instead. "Choose the eye shadow which most closely resembles your eyebrow colour, and apply using a small brush, creating a curved, very rounded shape. Use the mascara wand to brush the brows back into place. This way, the powder will stick to your skin, not the hair, and your eyebrow look will remain perfect for longer."

If you've steered clear of bold lips until now, dust off the lip liner because Gatsby glamour is all about a bold lip. "I love a matte lip, and the Great Gatsby look provides a perfect opportunity to put it to work," says Karim.

"Simply fill the whole lip with lip liner or blot your lipstick then mattify with a little translucent face powder."

Finally, remember to go easy on the mascara.

"One of my most important tips is to avoid using black mascara on the lower lashes, as this can be very ageing," warns Karim. "If you don’t want to go without, try brown mascara on the lower lashes instead, which still gives a defined look, but is much more flattering."
