Fringes: Are They The New Anti-Aging Treatment?

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kim Kardashian have both been spotted with new bangs, which are an easy way to update your look for spring while hiding pesky wrinkles without surgery

Sarah Harding recently admitted that her new fringe meant she could hide her wrinkles.

And it seems the former Girls Aloud star might be onto something as ‘bangs’ have been labeled the new anti-aging treatment.

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones was pictured sporting a new, wispy fringe on the red carpet with ex-husband Michael Douglas this week – while Kim Kardashian was also snapped with a clip-in one for a photoshoot.

We spoke to Adam Reed, one half of acclaimed haircare brand Percy & Reed as well as spokesperson for Viviscal, about why he reckons the fringe is making a comeback.

“I love a fringe and these are both age appropriate,” said the top hairdresser, who has worked with Ellie Goulding, Anna Friel, Sophie Dahl and Diane Kruger in the past.

“Catherine has a softer, fuller fringe, whilst Kim's fringe is shorter and sharper.”

If anti-aging is a concern, Adam advises cutting in a fringe because in general it makes people look younger.

“Fringes normally make someone look younger, they soften and frame a face.”

Although fringes don’t get rid of wrinkles per se, he admits they are a good alternative to expensive surgery.

“They only cover the wrinkles, they don't get rid of them - but of course they are a cheaper, less painful experience!” he told Yahoo Lifestyle.

And the good thing about a fringe is that anyone can rock one at any age – although he suggests taking supplements if hair starts to thin.

“There is no age limits [to a fringe], it's just important that you are maintaining an age appropriate shape,” he said.

Thinking of taking the plunge? We spoke to Adam about the different type of fringe to ask for from your hairdresser…

The FULL FRINGE: A statement look that comes around every three years or so.

It frames the face and draws attention to the eyes. Fringes are a great way to give an existing haircut a whole new lease of life.

The MICRO FRINGE: There is a strength that comes with such a short fringe that makes a very strong statement.

They really can be worn by anyone who has time to make sure it looks perfect, as they leave their house. Keep it as straight and blunt as possible.

To be totally on trend, keep it perfectly straight; do not add a concave when cutting.

The SIDE FRINGE: A softer look that is great for someone who wants a change but isn't entirely sure about a dramatic look.

It is also great for older women as it is feminine and flexible, think Reese Witherspoon & Helen Mirren.

LONGER BANGS:

If you want that soft wavy beach look longer bangs are great, they give an effortless femininity and youthfulness.

But if you want to be bang-on-trend for SS14, it’s all about the side-sweeping fringe, showcased by

“It is all about the side sweep fringe, which should be sharp, glossy and full,” he said.
