Ellie Goulding fails to impress with her X Factor outfit choice, what went wrong?

The Burn singer trended on Twitter thanks to her sartorial choices – but not for the right reasons as Julien Macdonald didn’t flatter her muscular frame

She has one of the best bodies in showbiz and famously runs daily to keep herself in tip-top shape.

But singer Ellie Goulding failed to flatter her figure with her outfit choice on The X Factor last night.

The singer – who performed her number one single Burn on last night’s results show – was vying for attention in her Julien Macdonald AW13 gown.

The Brit star is not one for shying away from revealing outfits – and we don’t blame her with a body like that – but last night’s look did little to enhance her athletic build.

The sheer panels down the side of the dress emphasized her hip bones, while the sequin panel along the middle drew attention to her stomach.

The 26-year-old former Kent Uni student completed her TV look with a pair of metallic hi-top boots, but we’re not convinced these were the right choice of shoes for her glam look.

We reckon Ellie should stick to what suits her muscular physique best in the future – and steer clear of ill-flattering dresses like this.

The key to dressing a muscular build is to make the most of your best bits, and for Ellie this is her toned tum and legs – both of which were covered up last night.

A skinny waist belt would have highlighted her trim shape while a shorter hem line would have emphasized her toned pins.

It’s also important to add a touch of ladylike glam if you’re muscular, so a pair of metallic strappy stilettos would have been easier on the eye than a pair of chunky wedged trainers.

"The trick to dressing athletic shapes lies in balance and proportion. Soften any strong lines, like broad shoulders, with delicate fabrics that add a touch of femininity, and avoid halterneck styles that will emphasise wide shoulders," said Emily O'Brien, editor-in-chief of Styloko.com.

"Play up your best assets, but try to resist the urge to show everything at once: reveal lean arms in a maxi dress, or show off great legs in a mini, for a more sophisticated outcome that'll tone down any sportiness.

"And if you're conscious of a straight up-and-down figure, look for pieces that create the illusion of curves - clever contrasting panels or pretty peplums all hint towards a womanly shape."

Later in the evening as she left the X Factor studios, Ellie wore an outfit more similar to her usual street style.

Rita Ora’s BFF showed off her toned arms and legs in a baseball tank top and shorts, while a pair of ankle boots added height to her petite frame.

She may be a vocal powerhouse, but we reckon she should stick to her typical fashion choices when showcasing those vocals on TV’s biggest talent show.
