Why do we celebrate Easter?

Although the Christian feast of Easter centres on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Spring celebration can be traced back to Pagan times.

Eostre (or Eastre) is a Germanic goddess of spring whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Many scholars point to the fact that Easter Sunday is not on a specific date but instead depends on the position of the moon as a pretty clear sign that this is a Pagan festival that has been adapted over the years.

Sweet buns have been baked as offerings to deities for centuries and some say that the addition of the white cross was by Christian priests attempting to appropriate the buns for the feast of the resurrection. Thus, hot cross buns were born!

The tradition of decorating eggs goes back to Egyptian times but after the death of Jesus, Christians began to paint them red to symbolise the blood shed at the crucifixion. Hollow eggs have come to represent the empty tomb that Jesus left behind when he rose from the dead, while also symbolising new life.
