Down's Syndrome Model Makes History By Walking On NYFW Catwalk

Yeah she did...and she rocked it!

If you're a fan of American Horror Story, you'll be familiar with Jamie Brewer, who plays Addie Langdon.

So, considering Jamie already has a part in a hit U.S. television show, we'd say she's already been making great strides for people with her particular disability - Down's Syndrome.

Not satisfied with conquering the world of drama, though, Jamie has decided to take a bite of the fashion world, walking on the coveted Mercedez Benz runway at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) for designer Carrie Hammer.

Much credit, of course, must be given to Carrie Hammer herself who, in a moment of brilliant inspiration, decided to theme her show this year, based on the slogan "Role Models Not Runway Models."

Carrie - whose designs are aimed at professional women who want to incorporate fashion and style into their executive lifestyles - decided that, instead of putting her designs on waifish mannequins or the usual runway figures, she wanted to send peopel that represented her real clients down the runway.

In fact, she wanted to send her clients themselves down the runway!

For her first show a year ago, she invited her client Danielle Sheypuk, who is in a wheelchair, to be a model.

“I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women and one of them happened to be a doctor and a sex therapist who happened to be in wheelchair,” Hammer told TODAY.com. “It was never intended to be this incredible statement.”

But it did end up being a really big statement and one that meant loads to an awful lot of people.

As Carrie told Today.com, she received an email from Katie Driscoll, who runs a non-profit trying to "change the face of beauty" for people with disabolities, which read:

“Thank you for being the change that is long overdue. I could literally cry every time I read an article talking about your decision to include a model who just happens to have a disability! YOU are what this world needed!”

And so that's when "Role Models Not Runway Models" began to take off.

Jamie Brewer, Carrie decided, would be a perfect choice for this year's Autumn show - already being a great role model for people with Down's Syndrome.

“Jamie is an activist for intellectual disabilities, she is a writer and artist and amazing actress,” said Hammer.

We agree!
