David Koma wows with innovative leather and futuristic A/W13 collection

Designer softens his designs for London Fashion Week A/W13, impressing the crowd with circular cuts and intricate leather layering

Could it be arranged for the entire David Koma LFW A/W13 collection boxed up and directed straight to Yahoo! Lifestyle? OK wishful thinking but we were seriously impressed with the new designs from the Central Saint Martins grad.

Renowned for his powerful cuts and leatherwork, this collection saw a softening of David’s work, incorporating more circular pieces, rounding off waistlines, shoulders and hems.Designer David came on stage to rapturous applause ©Getty

The base colour palette was in blacks, nudes and greys, but he injected an element of space age into some of the dresses, combining metallic leather in silver and blue with mesh sleeves.

We also saw some of the designs in bright red colourways and finishing up in ‘space cadet tea’ and petrol blue.

The jackets at the collars were oversized and exaggerated but narrowed in to tight synched-in waists and a mixture of peplum and skater-style that gave the whole collection an energy and youth.

We also noticed unusual and softer necklines from the designer, pulling away from the starker, straight edges we’ve seen in the past.David Koma's collection was edgy, modern and 'cyclical' ©Getty

The pieces were cleverly layered in a mixture of fabrics, from organza to leather, with flock printing and linear quilting.

Models wore their hair back with neutral make up and David once again teamed up with shoe designer Alain Quillici so bring Alain’s ski-high wedges onto the catwalk.

The crowd was obviously impressed as the models’ final walk was greeted with a sea of smart phones held up for pictures and David himself received a rapturous applause.
