Dad Helps Daughter Learn About Iconic Heroines By Recreating Photos Of Them

A photographer and his five-year-old daughter have created the unique series, for educational purposes

When Marc Bushelle encouraged his daughter Lily to recreate photos of famous women throughout history, he didn’t expect the images to go viral.

He simply wanted a fun way for his five-year-old daughter to learn about a series of incredible women.

Lily poses in the same iconic looks as the likes of Mother Teresa, Grace Jones and Nina Simone and was told each woman’s story by her dad.

“With this photo series, I wanted a way for my daughter, Lily, to learn about these unique heroines,” says Bushelle.

“To fortify her against any discrimination in her future and to really give her a strong sense of self worth. It was just for us, we never imagined that it would be shared with the world.”

The Brooklyn-based photographer says that he didn’t want to purely cover the usual heroines that we all know and love, but he “also wanted to include some unexpected women that were trailblazers in their own right.”

“Lily really enjoys dressing up,” says Bushelle. “It’s hard to get her out of the costumes after the shoot. But I think she also likes learning about these heroines. It’s incredible to hear her mention one of them in passing in the day.”

Once Bushelle, and his wife Janine, had decided which women to be inspired by, they did a lot of research and included their daughter in that, too. Whether it was watching a film starring the heroine in question or listening to some music, she was involved in every step.

The whole family also helped out with making the costumes and props, before Bushelle took the photos themselves.

We think you’ll agree that this is a truly brilliant way to help a child learn, outside of the classroom.
