Their granddaughter Melissa Sloan told the incredibly moving story of this beautiful couple who travelled the world together and were never apart.

After meeting in a bowling alley over 60 years ago, Don and Maxine built a life together filled with travel, volunteering and children after they adopted two sons.

A couple of weeks ago, Don fell and broke his hip. His health deteriorated quickly.

Simultaneously, the cancer Maxine had been fighting for years also got worse.

Melissa knew the family had once chance to keep the pair together during their final days and moved them both into a spare room in her home, putting their beds side by side.

“When Grandma woke up, saw him and they held hands and they knew that they were next to each other,” she explained.

“I knew in my heart what was supposed to happen – Grandma and Grandpa are supposed to be together. And Grandma and Grandpa are going to die together.”

At 7 o’clock one evening, Melissa heard her grandmother over a monitor take two last breaths before she passed away.

When they took her body from the room, Melissa went back in to check on her grandfather only to find that he too had died.

“As soon as her body left the room, he left with her and they passed away four hours from each other.”

“That’s all Don ever wanted – to be with his beautiful wife. He adored my grandmother.”

It’s real-life Notebook stories like this that show how ordinary, run-of-the-mill couples and their love stories are always the most beautiful.
