Cancer Mum Breastfeeds Newborn Son After Mastectomy

The emotional moment was captured at the hospital by photographer Kate Murray

This was the moment when a woman who was diagnosed with cancer while pregnant breastfed her newborn son for the first time.

The emotional event was captured by American photographer Kate Murray who was invited by the new mum to document the unique birth.

Murray posted two heartrending pictures to her Facebook page of mum and baby alongside a snapshot of their amazing journey.

"This is the definition of strength, love, and pure raw beauty," wrote Murray.

The unnamed mum was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer halfway through her pregnancy. She underwent chemotheraphy and had a single mastectomy while pregnant.

She was induced at 36 weeks so she could continue with treatment and Murray was there to capture the moment she breastfed her son for the first time while still in hospital.

"He latched on to her remaining breast all on his own and the room erupted in so many emotions," wrote Murray. "Breastfeeding is such a sacred bond, and this one just makes my heart break and swell at the same time."

"I am beyond blessed to have met and gotten to know this woman and her family, and so honored she asked me to be there to document these precious moments."

The heartwarming pictures have been liked nearly 300,000 times and shared by over 65,000 people.
