The best thing about Brits

National pride is about as high as it’s ever going to get this year with the Jubilee, Euro 2012 and the Olympics turning Britain red, white and blue – but what are we most proud of?

The best thing about Brits is our sense of humour, according to a new survey. Our unique comedy values are what 45 per cent of the British population rate as the thing they are most proud of, followed closely by our fondness for discussing the weather.

Rather than sporting glories or our empiric history, it seems that Brits are more impressed by the down-to-earth values we uphold. In the survey of 2,000 British adults, by Hovis, other top sources of pride were our stiff-upper-lip attitude, with 40 per cent of the votes, politeness, with 25 per cent, and amusingly, our sense of queue etiquette (30 per cent).

The survey also found that the Royal Family is a source of pride for 60 per cent of us, coming second only to the ‘rolling hills of the beautiful countryside’ as the thing that makes most Brits proud to be British.

Morris Dancing was also found to be an enduring symbol of our national character, with 13% rating this as a proud tradition.

Nearly a quarter of respondents agreed they were proud of the figure Britannia, which has been brought to life by Olympian Victoria Pendleton, who’s toga’d up to recreate the wave-ruler.
