Breastfeeding A ‘Dreadful Practice,’ Says Princess Michael Of Kent

The royal has, unsurprisingly, already received some backlash for her controversial comments.

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural things a woman can do. So for someone in a position of power to slam it as a “dreadful practice” is pretty scandalous.

The Princess, who’s the wife of the Queen’s cousin Prince Michael of Kent, reportedly told the Daily Mail, “My advice to women is don’t breastfeed – it’s a dreadful practice.”

The royal, Marie-Christine, explained that she didn’t do it. “My nanny said it was disgusting," she admitted.

Since her controversial comments were made public, the Princess has released a statement that definitely dampens her views.

“It’s not something I would do in public but everyone has a free choice,” her spokesman Simon Astaire said on her behalf.

The Princess, mum to Lord Freddie and Lady Gabriella Windsor, reportedly struggled to breastfeed her children when they were young – but we doubt that will work in her favour against those who protest for women's rights to feed their baby in public.

“I just think somebody with that kid of social standing should think about what they’re saying,” says Emily Slough, founder of the Free to Feed campaign.

Emily created the campaign after famously being lableled a “tramp” on Facebook for breastfeeding in public earlier this year. She added that it’s damaging for mums to face a backlash for doing something so natural.

“I don’t understand what the logic is,” says Emily. “It’s not disgusting. It’s not dreadful. That’s how we’re supposed to feed our children. If they can’t get over the whole women and breasts things – it’s just babies eating.”

The debate has been a hot topic all year. Recently, swanky London hotel Claridges asked a mum nursing her baby in their restaurant to cover up – which led to a mass ‘nurse-in’ outside the hotel.

And even political figures are weighing in. Ukip leader Nigel Farage said mums breastfeeding could “sit in the corner” in restaurants while David Cameron showed his support for the practice.

“The Prime Minister shares the view of the NH, which is that breastfeeding is completely natural, and it’s totally unacceptable for any women to be made to feel uncomfortable when breastfeeding in public,” a spokesperson for Number 10 said.

Plenty of celeb mums have also been photographed breastfeeding in public – or used their social media channels to share intimate feeding snapshots with the world.

Alyssa Milano, Gisele Bundchen, Jamie King and Miranda Kerr are just a handful of the famous faces who’ve been helping to show just how natural it is.
