Need a distraction from the football? We’ve rounded up 7 awesome cakes you can bake in 90 minutes - giving you the perfect excuse to tuck in and enjoy a slice after the whistle’s blown

Masala Chai Apple Cake

Fragrant with spices such as ginger, cardamom, star anise and cinnamon this Masala Chai Apple Cake isn’t just your average apple cake. Once the spices and tea have been added, the whole thing is mixed together and bakes in around 55 minutes. The recipe was created by Nik, from the blog A Brown Table - and it takes inspiration from the aromatic spices of India.

The Moistest Chocolate Berry Cake

Made to celebrate her 26th birthday, this gorgeous Chocolate Berry Cake was created by Natasha, of the blog Tartlet Sweets. Give everything a mix together and bake, leaving the cakes to cool during half time. Then, during the second half of the game you can crack on with the icing. The cake base is a moist chocolate cake, with a berry mascarpone frosting and filling.  Natasha describes it as “rich, decadent, soft, delicious” - just the thing, whether you’re celebrating at full time or need consolation.

Russian Tiramisu Cake

Natasha, from the blog Natasha’s Kitchen, specialises in Russian and Ukrainian food - and she’s come up with this twist on the Italian Tiramisu - a Russian Tiramisu Cake. The sponge fingers have made way for a Russian ‘biskvit’ sponge base, which she says doesn’t go mushy or soggy once you’ve assembled the layers. This cake takes 1 hour 30 minutes to make from scratch.

Chocolate Fudge Cake

Oh yes. Nigella Lawson says that just the sight of this Chocolate Fudge Cake, “proud and tall and thickly iced on its stand, comforts”, and we’d agree (although it tastes pretty fine too, obviously). We made this from Nigella’s recipe which results in a decadent and fudgy cake which is still deceptively light and fluffy. We baked ours in one large tin, which took a little bit longer than the recommended sandwich tins - and just cut the cake in half before icing. But if you’re using sandwich tins, you should get the cake finished before the ref calls full time.

Cranberry and Coconut Bread

Naomi at Bakers Royale created this Cranberry and Coconut Bread, which takes just 10 minutes to mix together, and isn’t complicated to make at all. Slide it into the oven and it’ll bake in 60-90 minutes. So it’ll keep you busy during half time, too. Naomi says the tartness of the cranberries are balanced by the sweet coconut and chocolate chips. You can always use frozen cranberries if you can’t get fresh ones.

Chocolate Hazelnut Layer Cake

More chocolate, but this one’s spread with a cream-cheese based, moussey hazelnut icing. This Chocolate Hazelnut Layer Cake is from the blog Cookies and Cups. I know, it looks impressive for 90 minutes in the kitchen, doesn’t it? The cake itself bakes in 25-30 minutes - the rest of the time accounts for cooling, mixing and assembling the finished cake. Oh, and don’t forget the drizzle of hazelnut chocolate spread at the end. Beautiful.

Salted Caramel Cookie Dough Cake

Cindy from the blog Italicana Kitchen made this dessert - which is a sort of cross between a cake and a cookie - and then added salted caramel to the inside. This Salted Caramel Cookie Dough Cake bakes in 40-50 minutes and then you’ve got the mixing and cooling time on top, meaning you could have this served once the game’s finished. Cindy says it’s easy to make - including the home-made salted caramel sauce that’s layered into the cake before baking.
