Why Is Everyone Talking About Kim Sears Swearing?

Andy Murray's fiancé made the front pages today after being 'caught' swearing but is this sexism at work?

World No 6 Andy Murray has secured a place in the final of the Australian Open, but you wouldn’t know judging by today’s newspapers.

Almost all the coverage of Murray’s hard-fought semi-final against Tomas Berdych has focused not on his win but on fiancé Kim Sears’ apparent swearing during the tense match.

The 27-year-old was ‘caught’ on camera using the word f*** a number of times in what has been described as a “foul-mouthed rant”, directed at Murray’s opponent.

Kim’s choice of words landed her on the front page of the Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Daily Mirror and The Times while mention of Andy’s win was relegated to the back pages.

But is all this coverage of what Kim may or may not have said rather sexist?

A number of Twitter users expressed their delight at Kim’s impassioned outburst, especially as the portrait painter has something of a quiet reputation.

Female tennis players Andrea Petkovic and Anne Keothavong tweeted their joy at seeing Kim let rip courtside.

I LOVE KIM SEARS SO MUCH

@BenRothenberg: Forget how big the diamond is; THIS is what true love is made of. #ausopen https://t.co/jETjH7CunD” f****** hilarious!

Andy defended Kim’s colourful language after the game as he admitted: “In the heat of the moment you can say stuff that you regret”.

But should he have to defend his fiancé’s support, even if it does contain a few swear words? Surely it’s nothing worse than is said on the terraces on a Saturday afternoon or in the pub any night of the week?

Traipsing round the world watching tennis match after match to support my fiancé I'd say a lot worse than Kim Sears. Get off her back

Forget the mitigating circumstances of a high pressure situation like a semi final of a Grand Slam – in 2015, is it really that important that a woman was caught swearing at all? Ever?

As well as her choice of words being the topic of conversation today, much time was dedicated to comparing the size of Kim’s engagement ring to that of Berdych’s fiancé, Ester Saratova.

Talented artist Kim Sears has been named only as someone's girlfriend, defined on the value of a ring & been headline news for swearing. Wow

You get the feeling that somewhere down the line, the world may have missed the point…

Kim Sears “outburst” should not be treated with pearl-clutching opprobrium. I enjoyed it. An instinctive show of love for her fiancé.
