Urban Outfitters Red Blood Stains Blunder Leaves The Store Red Faced Too

Fancy your shirt with a dash of blood? Yeah, us too! NOT.

Uh oh, major drama in the land of expensive high street retailers Urban Outfitters.

Yesterday, Twitter suddenly erupted into a swirling vortex of rage, after it was noticed that Urban Outfitters were trying to sell online a "vintage" Kent State University sweatshirt that appeared to have a blood stain down the front of it.

There are some of you that might not remember, but there are many that will still be affected, emotionally, by the Kent State shootings of 1970, when the Ohio National Guard shot dead four students who were protesting against the Cambodian Campaign during the war in Vietnam.

Many are understandably horrified that the sweatshirt appears to be alluding to this terrible event.

Some have questioned whether the clothing brand intend to commission other garments, inspired by more recent high school and college shootings.

After lots of angry posting and tweeting, the store was pushed to take down the questionable item from their site. It is now listed as "sold out."

And they have released a statement to apologise:

"Urban Outfitters sincerely apologizes for any offense our Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt may have caused. It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such. The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. The red stains are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray. Again, we deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively and we have removed it immediately from our website to avoid further upset."

Hmm.

Unfortunately, though, this isn't where the story ends.

The Kent State sweatshirt in question appeared on eBay, soon after it was removed from Urban Outfitters' online store.

Where Urban Outfitters were selling it for $129, the eBay seller has posted it with a starting bid of $550 and claiming it to be "perfect for Halloween or whatever your deal is."

NOT NICE.
