Tickled Pink: 11 Reasons Why Pink Is More Than Just Our Favourite Colour
Party with a capital ‘P’.
Singer Pink turns 35 today, and in celebration of her big day we look back at what makes the eccentric recording artist one of the most popular and influential celebrities of our time – in other words, let’s get this party started.
1. She’s good at what she does
Pink’s sold more than 40 million albums and 65 million singles altogether – and counting. Popular, much?
2. She doesn’t just please the critics
The singer was the second-most played female artist during the noughties, and she has more than three Grammy Awards, one Brit Award, and six MTV Video Music Awards under her belt.
Again, and counting.
3. Her words are inspirational...
“How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?” – ‘Dear Mr President’ addresses some home truths.
4. But the girl can also breathe fire
Pink is well-known for being controversial, rather than having a clean-cut, diplomatic persona. After that Kanye/Taylor incident at the 2009 VMA’s, Pink tweeted the Bound 2 singer to be ‘the biggest piece s**t on the planet’ in defence of shaken-up Swift. Beware, this singer definitely doesn’t stay on the fence.
5. She doesn’t care about how she is percieved
Fun fact: it was Pink who proposed to racer husband Carey Hart, as opposed to doing things the ‘proper’ way. Way to slam old gender stereotypes! Rather than allowing the media to pick on her extreme sense of style, Pink stands by what she looks like - "I'm eclectic. I'm a tomboy, but I'm kind of a hippie and kind of a gangster [...] I don't know if that's a good thing, but it is my thing." (InStyle magazine)
6. She can stand up for herself
The songstress’ material is different. Although she initially faced opposition with label LaFace over regenerating her image, the formerly R&B-singing Pink took the reins of her career and transformed herself into a rock-pop icon.
7. Pink is a working mum
When Pink got preggers, there were doubts about how she was going to carry on with her exhausting career. Young Willow Sage is now three, and her mother shows no sign of slowing down, let alone stopping.
8. She is a true musician
Pink took a greater amount of creative control after her debut album release, not wanting to be another cookie-cutter act. Second album ‘Missundaztood’ (2001) took the reins for her drastic change in direction, and since then she’s never looked back. Songs such as ‘F***ing Perfect’ and ‘Just Give Me A Reason’ speak of her life and uncover delicate issues - here’s to many more years of her honesty.
9. She’s versatile
From her racy moves in ‘Lady Marmalade’ to contemporary dance full of emotion in ‘Try’; from youthful plays in ‘Get This Party Started’ to her meaningful vocals in ‘Just Like A Pill’, Pink just seems to pull off everything she tries her hand (or her voicebox) at.
10. She definitely knows how to put on a good show
The singer’s tours are world-renowned, definitely up there with Beyonce and Britney’s showtime manner. Millions painstakingly sit with their laptops trying to secure tickets before they run out (and they do. Fast), and she never fails to disappoint.
11. She is 100% real
Pink’s music speaks to thousands of people because her words are the hard, gritty truth. In a world where music can be cliched and gimicky, she is so very important. You go girl!
