The Nation’s Favourite Childhood Tea Time Snack Revealed
Arugably the best thing about having a cup of tea - scoffing a load of your favourite biscuits
Us Brits are renowned for upholding the sanctity of that most holy of institutions: the cup of tea.
Whether your brew is a builder’s with two sugars or Earl Grey with a splash of almond milk, there’s nothing quite so comforting as a cuppa.
In fact the best thing about having a mug of tea is the excuse it gives you to indulge in your favourite sweet treat.
According to a new survey the snack that reminds us most of our childhood is the sometimes jammy, always fun Wagon Wheels.
With over 40 per cent of the vote, the kinda big and kinda round marshmallow biscuit came out on top followed closely by the classic pink wafer fingers, which upon reflection just tasted like vanilla and sugar.
Jammy Dodgers and Iced Gems also came up trumps while the retro Battenberg cake rounded out the top five.
The full results of the survey, as carried out by children’s charity Dreams Come True, are:
1. Wagon Wheel 42.8%
2. Pink Wafer Fingers 34.8%
3. Jammy Dodgers 32.7%
4. Iced Gems 32.1%
5. Battenberg 31.6%
6. Custard Cream 31.2%
7. Victoria Sponge 26%
8. Jaffa Cake 24.8%
9. Tea Cakes 22.7%
10. Fondant Fancies 22.3%
11. Bakewell Tart 16.9%
12. Crispy Cake 12.1%
13. Eccles Cake 11.5%
14. Banana Cake 4.7%
15. Devonshire Apple Cake 2.4%
While we do not want to cast doubt upon the findings, we can’t help but notice a few key sweet treats that we enjoyed (read: basically lived on) when we were little ‘uns are missing...
Kit Kat – We can’t have been the only ones who nibbled the chocolate off each end and sucked our tea through it like a straw?
Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer – The sight of that gold and red wrapper in the biscuit tin or your lunchbox and you knew you were in for a treat.
Rich Tea – How the classic Rich Tea biscuit didn’t make it into the top 15 we’ll never know. Bonus points if, like us, you used to make your own Rich Tea sandwiches by spreading butter between two and dunking them in your brew. So wrong but so right.
Angel cake – Something about those three layers and that vanilla buttercream made this our absolute favourite cake to find in the cupboard.
Chocolate Hobnobs – Perhaps the most glaring omission from the list, the chocolate Hobnob is truly a king among snacks. Plus, if it’s good enough for Tom Hiddleston, it’s good enough for us.
