Thalia's Joking Around About Her 'Rib Removal' Really Isn't Funny

Publicity-hungry Mexican singer rumoured to have had ribs removed to look thinner posts pictures of herself with a jar of pickled ribs on Instagram, before laughing at her fans for believing they might be her own

Just when you thought Z-list celeb tactics couldn't get any worse, a Mexican singer who you may never have heard of has won mountains of publicity with one of the tackiest, offensive Instagram uploads we've seen in a long time.

Thalia, generally considered to be Mexico's most successful female singer, regenerated old rumours that she'd had her bottom ribs removed to make her look thinner, by posting a picture of herself grinning with a jar of pickled ribs.

She's also a successful actress, playing roles in a number of telenovelas (South American soap operas) and has gained a huge following in the Philippines, where 90s rumours of her rib removal were strongest.

She captioned the picture: "To all my loving Filipino fans, here is the proof ...I love My Famous Ribs, I kept them with me all these years… And the Saga continues...."

Sites that have reported on the image include the Daily Mail, which says: "It is still unclear whether the video was a joke."

Er...we're pretty darn sure it is a joke, though admittedly it shows off a rather strange sense of humour. But the blasé nature of her post is insulting not just to her fans, but also to anyone who's ever struggled with eating disorders or body dysmorphia.

People really do have ribs removed to look thinner.

The tasteless photo appeared at around the same time Girls star Zosia Mamet admitted her long battle with an eating disorder.

She wrote in a column for Glamour Magazine: "That's the thing about these kinds of disorders: They're consuming; they make you egocentric; they're all you can see."

And also as researchers call for help in a new project aimed at looking at a DNA link to eating disorders.

It seems many people have taken Thalia at her word (or picture at least), believing that the jar she's posing with really does contain her own bones.

So she took to Instagram once again to admit that no, in fact they're not. Big surprise.

Then to make matters worse she decided to continue the hilarity by posting a picture of herself eating ribs and reposting the original image with a big red cross drawn through it.

But even so, rumours around whether Thalia did once have her ribs removed to make her waist look smaller will continue, as perhaps will her penchent for insulting her fans. Nice.
