You might have seen some or parts of this video already, but it's worth watching the whole thing.

Whatever your views of abortion, the filming and shaming of women in vulnerable situations, without their consent, is indefensible.

Sadly, in the UK, we do not have the appropriate laws in place to protect the women in these situations from intimidation from protest groups.

If you want more information about Abort67, the activists in the video, and why exactly what they are doing is unjustifiable, you should read Sunny Hundal's piece on the matter.

From our perspective, the most poignant thing about the video is the emphasis on choice and understanding.

The British public is overwhelmingly pro-choice. As Hundal points out, only four-to-seven per cent of those polled actually support a ban. Yet these sorts of intimidation practises are threatening the right to choice, by making it very difficult for the clinics which offer abortion services to actually do their jobs.

This is the case of a small few falsely claiming to represent the voice of the people and it's not fair.

The second point which the woman in the video eloquently makes is about understanding. All stories are personal - including the background of one of the protesters, who herself chose to have an abortion and then presumably regretted it.

Not all women who seek abortions will have been abused or suffered violence, granted, but the point that she makes about understanding and empathy is still valid.

Far more valuable than intimidation and specious arguments about infanticide, is the practice of educating women about sex and family planning, listening to each unique story and supporting every woman in her own, very personal decision.

We need to find better ways of supporting women in difficult situations, rather than scaring them into submission and taking away their choices.
