Meet The Wonut - The Latest Food Hybrid Everyone's Obsessed With

Take a doughnut, deep fry it and cover it in icing and sprinkles. Voilà!

First there was the cronut – the croissant/doughnut hybrid. Then there was the duffin – the doughnut/muffin mash-up. We’ve even heard tell of the lesser-spotted cragel – a croissant crossed with a bagel.

The latest food Frankenstein to take social media by storm is the wonut – a waffle/doughnut mix to add to the list of foods you’ll like on Instagram but probably never get your hands on in real life.

In the wonut’s defence, it really is a thing of beauty.

Created in Chicago’s Waffles Café, the premise of the sweet treat is pleasingly simple – make a fluffy breakfast waffle using batter, then deep fry the sucker!

Wonuts come in a variety of flavours from blueberry with lemon sugar to Mexican Chocolate with candied orange peel and chocolate shavings.

We reckon our favourite would have to be a toss up between the Red Velvet and Peppered Bacon with maple glaze but let’s face it, we’d probably order both!

Coming in at a very reasonable $3 (about £2), the invention has been described by some snack aficionados as “the 10th Wonder of the World” – hey, when you’ve eaten that much sugar it’s okay to embellish on Wonders.

As these bad boys are currently only available in the Windy City, chances are you won’t be chowing down on one any time soon.

But knowing east London and food fads, there’s probably a bearded, bespectacled hipster in Shoreditch burning his fingers dropping a potato waffle into a deep-fat fryer as we speak.

Yum.
