Magaluf Girl Sex Video: Slut Shaming Misses The Point. Again.

Everyone from Nicole Scherzinger to the Mayor of Magaluf has condemned the woman but what about the men involved?

A few weeks ago the word “mamading” entered the British lexicon as a video of an 18-year-old Brit performing oral sex on 24 men in a Magaluf nightclub for a free drink went viral.

Mamading is the colloquial term that is used to describe the performance of sex acts in exchange for free drinks, which has become so prevalent on 18-30 style holidays.

While half of us were disgusted, the other half who have been on these holidays sadly shook their heads at the latest example of what happens to women on these ‘rites of passage’ trips.

Since the video was leaked (by the company that organized the bar crawl where it took place) the floodgates have opened to a tidal wave of judgment and damnation of the teenager from everyone with wi-fi access and a Twitter account.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that in this entire scenario it’s not the bars, the DJs, the bar crawl promoters or the two dozen recipients of oral sex, who are all men, at fault but the lone woman.

Carnage Magalluf, the aforementioned company, claimed they were “disgusted by the young lady that was doing it.”

“She should be very much spoken to by her parents. If anything it’s to do with her upbringing.”

Even Nicole Scherzinger has waded in on the subject, remarking on the woman’s lack of morals:

“You better find God and ask for forgiveness…The parents have to teach these kids moral values, it’s sad. She’s degrading herself to nothing.”

The situation falls in that grey area between slut shaming and peer pressure that even the most die-hard feminists may find hard to defend.

"Slut shaming" is reviled by feminists because it demonises women’s choice to engage in consensual sexual activities simply because outsiders don’t approve.

That's not even mentioning the blindingly obvious fact that if the gender roles had been reversed, words like 'slut' and 'slag' would not be bandied about.

The harsh and unfair judgment of this woman isn’t a simple case of “slut shaming” as it’s safe to say that she had very little autonomous choice in the situation.

We’re going to take a leap of faith here and guess that she didn’t march up to the bar, ask for a €3 drink and then offer to pay by giving 24 men a blow job, hand picking men in the bar, getting them to line up and then forcing them to get their penises out while she made her way down the line.

Yahoo Lifestyle spoke to a young woman who has been to the Spanish island and witnessed these things first hand.

“I saw things like that in Magaluf years ago - people playing sex games for free drinks,” claims Fiona, 23.

“It’s normalized over there – you’re not shocked when you see it.”

“Everyone was judging but not enough to intervene.”

Maybe the British teenager should have said no, perhaps if she had been of stronger fortitude she could have stopped in her drunken haze and realized that maybe she doesn’t really want to give two dozen strangers head in public as a baying crowd watches, judges and films it.

Predictably, there has been little to no mention of the 24 men who were the recipients of these sex acts.

People have been quick to point out how ashamed the unnamed woman’s parents must be, but we get the feeling that none of those men would want their mums to know they were the 13th dick in the line.

But lucky for them they never will as, like all these ‘slut shaming’ exposes, the men taking part are granted anonymity.

One of the most depressing side effects of this story is the girl-on-girl hating that goes on whenever something like this happens.

Sexism has come so far that (some, not all) men don’t even need to call girls slags, whores and sluts anymore – other women are doing it for them.

It’s bittersweet to think that one of the women tweeting about the Magaluf woman’s disgusting lack of morals could be the mother/sister/girlfriend of one of the two dozen men.

The mayor of Magaluf expressed his “total rejection and anger at the activities” and has since passed a law giving the Majorcan law enforcement “tighter control over the operation of pub crawl organisers,” so perhaps this is the end of such escapades.

But we get the feeling it’s going to take a lot more than that to change this pervasive culture that places such a high premium on ‘fun’ with little to no regard for women.
