Is This The End Of Shaving For Women?

Hairy Legs Club blog allows women to proudly display their unshaven legs as more women choose to ditch the razor

Are you a fan of the au naturel look or do you prefer to be plucked within an inch of your life?

Even though the world would have us believe that hair-free is the only way to be, thousands of women have taken to Tumblr to show off their hirsute pins.

Hairy Legs Club features hundreds of pictures of women from around the world proudly displaying their unshaved legs, often with positive messages encouraging others to do the same.

As well as pro-hair images from women, there are notes from supportive men who say they prefer the natural look on their prospective partners.

The blog is very clear about the message it wishes to send out, as it explains from the off:

‘This is a POSITIVE space. This means that any negative messages or images will not be posted and the users submitting will be blocked.”

Interspersed with life-affirming notes from women with the confidence to be themselves are the sadder stories of bullying, peer pressure and self-loathing that any woman who considers themselves hairy can empathise with.

“I used to hate it, I didn’t feel like a woman at all. I hated everything about the way I looked. But in recent years I’ve to come to realise why I hate it. I don’t hate the hair, I hate the way that society makes me feel it’s wrong,” wrote one blogger.

A worryingly common story is from girls who claim their parents are forcing them to shave, labelling their natural hair growth as disgusting.

“My mum is making me shave my legs tomorrow morning and I thought I should show them off to the world once,” writes a young blogger.

The popularity of the blog comes along as the topic of female body hair has become a much-discussed issue.

This month, a professor at Arizona State University in the US has offered extra credit to her female students if they agree not to shave their body hair for a whole term.

Professor Breanne Fahs, women and gender studies specialist, created the project to get her students to challenge accepted gender norms.

And yes, male students are eligible for the extra credit too – if they commit to shaving all their body hair below the neck.

It’s been 15 years since Julia Roberts proudly/accidentally showed off her underarm hair on the red carpet and with few female celebrities keen to follow in her footsteps it looks like waxing, shaving and plucking are still very much on the menu.

But perhaps we’re moving towards a more accepting society where women who choose to ditch the razor are welcomed with open, hairy arms.
